Amoebiasis

Hi, I got amebiasis after travelling in Central America a few years ago and encountering the parasite Entamoeba histolytica. It was initially treated using metronidazole which worked but the parasite returned within twelve months. Tried metro. again but didn't work so had to be referred to an infectious disease specialist to be prescribed paromomycin. This was about twelve months ago and the parasite has now returned again. Unfortunately the GP and specialist I have been treated by don't fill me with much confidence and didn't really seem to know much about the parasite and associated disease. Has anyone heard of this parasite returning multiple times?

Hi Chris,
I was just searching around the Internet looking for any one else who'd contracted this nasty parasite and saw your post. I contracted amebiasis whilst away in dubai about 4 months ago. It was treated with intravenous antibiotics and a heavy course of metrozonidale (something I never want to take again!)
However since then my immune system has been completely shot. I've been sent home from work twice in the last month as I have horrendous flu. I've been lethargic, to the point of feeling continuously exhausted, and have just not felt 'normal' since.
Did anything come back from your docs? Can this bacteria redevelop after treatment? Would appreciate any help/experience you may have with this.
Thanks,
Laura

However, it seems that it takes away the good gut bacteria. Use some probiotic drinks and see if it helps.

Thank for your reply. I was taking lots of probiotic drinks alongside the medication at the time, as I'd been warned that the antibiotics were pretty strong (they werent lying!).
Since then I've been trying to keep up with that, although admittedly not as many as I had been.
I'll try and take them again. Spoke to my own docs here and they've suggested a blood test too just to check everything is okay and bacteria has cleared.
Fingers crossed it's gone for good!

He responds well for treatment for possible Schistosomiasis.
Very keen to hear any updates on your experience.
