I am now terrified please help!

As most have read i stopped drinking recently and got a pain under right rib and too the back.

i am now getting the same pain on the left, doctor thinks on the right is the galbladder but the left is getting worse and worse and from looking on line is most likely the spleen.

From looking online i see this is from end stage liver disease, anyone know if this is right? I don't want to die, i have a daughter and i am only in my 20's and now terrified.

Someone please advise

Can you get yourself to A & E - think you should if the pains are worrying you.

Please learn the lesson now as it took me time the lesson not to self diagnose yourself by Googling what you have. I used to do it and I thought I had caused brain damage. Also having stopped drinking you will likely be more anxious. Don't self diagnose.

How long since you stopped drinking?

      Hi andrew,

Thanks for your reply, yes stopped drinking. I know i should not self diagnose but the pains are real. I heard real pains can be aniexty as well.

tambdy. Firstly, look in the mirror. Is your skin yellow? It would be if you were in end-stage liver disease, although, jaundice (yellow skin) is not a definite indictator that you are, the absence of yellow skin means that you are not. Have a look at the whites of your eyes, are they yellow? That indicates that you have some liver problems, if they are, but the liver is very good at repairing itself if the alcohol or drugs which are causing the problem are removed from your life.

You say that you are in your 20s. From alcohol alone, you would have had to drink absolutely massive amounts to ruin your liver, I am talking two 1 litre bottles of spirits a day for a few years. Yes, you would kill yourself young if you carried on drinking for years, and it is very bad to get into a habit where you can't stop without suffering severe withdrawal symptoms.

I think it is likely that, if your liver was in a very poor condition, your doctor would have recognised that instantly. I don't know you and I haven't seen you but I would hazard a guess that you are panicking when you don't need to smile

Go back to your doctor and ask him/her to do tests. If you want reassurance regarding your liver, ask the doctor to do Liver Function Tests (LFTs) which consist of a blood test which is sent off to the lab and you get the results a few days later.

The most important thing is that you have stopped drinking. I don't know how much you were drinking but I guess it was a lot if you are now worried.

Try not to worry too much, the pains could be many things, most of which are not serious, but you need to be properly examined and for the doctor to know that you are now having worse pain on your left side.

Your biggest fear, that you may be dying, seems very unlikely to me, even with the small amount of information you have given, but you must go back to the doctor because most illnesses can be more effectively treated the earlier they are diagnosed.

I hope you get it resolved quickly smile

I just saw that you said you have been drinking a bottle of wine per night for 8 years. That is way too much and is putting yourself at risk but I don't believe that would cause end stage liver disease by your age. I am a qualified nurse working as an alcohol treatment specialist, by-the-way.

      Hi Paul,

LFT is today so touch wood. Maybe it is all my organs now returning to normal and that is causing all the pains.

No yellowing of my eyes, only red as my sleeping has been terrible and no yellow of the skin.

Lets hope tests come back ok

You may have a raised Gamma GT which indicates too much alcohol, but it lowers when you stop drinking so don't worry about that. If your eyes are not yellow, there won't be any terrible news about your liver smile

What about the pains near my spleen, liver and kidneys are they normal withdrawl pains? I woke up with the kidney pain this morning.

Coming off alcohol can cause all sorts of bodily symptoms including the shakiness, various aches and pains and nausea, among other things. How long is it since you last had a drink?

Hi Paul about a week now.

Just been to doctors and got urine and blood tests done, safe to say i will be a nervous wreck until Tuesday until i find out.

She said the same as you that if it was anything major i would be yellow like the simpsons and it could be that my insides are swollen due to all the drink well inflammand and evertually being off the drink it will all return to normal and that she does think there is problems with the gal bladder.

She did feel my stomach and cant feel anything swollen which worried me, i know if it is fatty liver it is curable but if she cannot feel it swollen and there is liver problems surely then it will be un curable.

I also spoke to her about waking up with pins and needles in my left hand and also still constipated and tired and not eating.

I just hope this is my wake up call and nothing more serious.

Oh also paul i advised her about my constant de hydration even though i drink lots of water my pee is still dark green.

Is everything i have mentioned normal with stopping the drink?

Green urine can be an indicator of a urinary tract infection which could also explain your pain. Has she given you a prescription for anti-biotics? Asparagus and certain drugs can also cause green urine. It is not normally related to alcohol withdrawal but it is also not an indication of anything that can't be treated quite easily or (in the case of asparagus) just ignored.

No anti biotics told me to take paracetamol for the pain, sometimes my urine is clear but if i go 1 hour without any water i am feeling really dehydrated and green urine.

so if it is something in the track, do you mean it can't be cured easily?   If that could explain my pain and be sorted pretty easily then touch wood it is that smile hopefully the rest of the pains are just inflammation and will pass?

No, Urinary Tract Infection, or UTI simply refers to the fact that the infection is in the urinary tract which goes from the kidneys to the exit from your body smile UTIs are very common, I would suggest you keep drinking clear fluids and go back if the urine is still green in a couple of days, or at any point, if the pain increases much.

Thanks Paul i will, but would that give me pain under the right rib?
    • Posted

More likely at the back (kidneys) or lower down at the front. I would suggest that you try not to imagine what might be wrong (it is easy to find all sorts of horrible diagnoses by Googling symptoms smile ) and try and relax as much as possible. It is a shame that you didn't have an alcohol detox, as the medication used for that also helps with anxiety and it gets you a week under your belt to start feeling better. Go easy with the paracetamol, don't take more than the recommended daily amount because it will affect your liver. I am a little surprised that your GP advised that you take that while investigating your liver but, as I said before, it doesn't sound like you have serious liver problems and the LFTs will just give an indication of the effect alcohol is having on your liver (to make you think about it smile ).

Anxiety can cause a LOT of symptoms in the chest and stomach and I think that explains a lot of what you are experiencing. You are doing everything right in terms of getting checked out by the doctor. Just need to find a way to stop worrying smile Much of what you are worrying about is likely to be stuff that will go away itself as you move forward without drinking.

      Hi paul,

so touch wood but no pain this morning. I did wake up with pins and needles again but i can put up with that lol. Also very dehydrated and i am guessing that is the reason i slept 12 hours and am still shattered lol

Just keep sipping clear fluids all day. You could also have a word at your local chemist about over-the-counter rehydration drinks which contain electrolytes. Good that the pain has subsided smile

Thanks buddy, it comes back in short bursts but much better. Lets hope all results come back ok and my body needs time to repair smile

Hi paul so i went to hospital tonight, he gave me anti biotic as have a bad infection and thinks it is the galbladder and says it can't affect any other organ even though it will be 4 weeks for the test. Do you know if that is right?

I have been sleeping a lot like 15 hours a night, very itchy skin now and same pain but opposite side under left rib. i just hope everything comes back ok and the liver etc is fine. Any idea's what the pain is on the left side under the rib?

Yes, tambdy, gall bladder problems can cause itchy skin. Pain is normally on the right side but can radiate to the back, under the shoulder blades, behind the breast bone or on the left side. It sounds very much like the doctor you have seen at the hospital is right about it being an infection of the gall bladder. It's good that you are on antibiotics and that should improve things. However, if the pain gets more severe, don't ignore it, go back to A & E. It doesn't sound to me like this is anything to do with your liver. Excessive alcohol consumption may not have been involved in causing this problem but, for other heath reasons, you are better to keep off the booze, especially as driking too much will dehydrate you and could make the problem worse.

Good luck and I hope you are felling better soon smile

Hello Piyush57823. There are many causes of jaundice (not only liver disease). You should go back to your doctor and get it checked out

      Hello,

You seem to be pretty well informed. I am scared of pancreas issues. Not pancreatitus because the pain isnt very severe.

Anyway, i am a 27 year old male. For the past couple years I have had a bottle of wine a night. Sometimes more. Sometimes a couple beers and then a bottle of wine a few hours later. I have felt very tired most days. Afrer doing little. After eating i feel tired. Then at 2am i am wide awake and drink wine to relax and sleep. I do suffer from anxiety and OCD symptoms. Many are similar to "pure o" . One thing i do , which is ocd related, is sort of squeeze all of my left side muscles and lean my body to the left. I do this frequently. I have been doing this for a long time on and off for a few years. But it has never caused any pain before.

For the past 9 days Ive been feeling a pain in my upper left abdomen. Feels dull and like a burning almost. It is directly under my left breast , a little to the right of my nipple. The pain comes and goes throughout the day. It is not constant 100% through the entire day. But it happens frequently. Every 10 or 15 minutes. The pain doesnt seem directly associated with body movement. Which is scaring me. Although, it seems to be worse at night while lying down. I have had very little appetite since i have felt this pain. And have trouble eating anything. Ive lost about 5 pounds in 8 days.

I dont have insurance so i went to a an immediate care clinic. I told the lady everything including my ocd and she chalked it up to that and told me to see a shrink. She gave me an xray and nothing looked weird. Although, to my knowledge thats best for bone related injuries and lung stuff?

I felt a little relief. But she didnt give ke any blood work or anything. Directly after leaving, i felt hungry and i went and had a huge burger. About an hour after the burger i felt extremely light headed and nauseous for another hour. A few more hours later i had some chips with french onion dip. I then had a glass of wine. I only made it through about half way through the glass when i started to feel extremely nauseous again. It scared the sh*t out of me and i have not drank anything since.

My appetite and anxiety has now doubled. Especially after all the pancreas searches on google. I ate a lunchable yesterday and also a tiny bit of spaghettie with meat. I felt a bit lightheaded after both but not nauseous like after the burger.

Today i woke up and my right side is hurting. Directly across from where the left side pain was the rib feels sore to touch! I dont do the "ocd twitch" on my right side. This doesnt make any sense. I ate a small piece of toast today and the tiniest slice of pizza only. I have felt a bit lightheaded all day but again, not nauseous like after the burger a day or two back.

I am very scared. Any insight will be good.

from07till. It sounds like your symptoms were not investigated fully. One thing it sounds like it could be is a stomach ulcer from your description of the pain. That would also fit with the reaction to things like wine and onion dip.

However, you need this fully investigated because it could be numerous other things, most of which are easily treated and not dangerous if dealt with now. I would go back and ask them to look at you again and try not to talk too much about the OCD (although they will probably know about it from your records) as that seems to be pushing them into believing this is totally psychological.

In the meantime, try taking some antacids and see if that helps but don't leave it. Get some proper medical advice.
