Rivaroxiban and age of people on them

Hi, just wondering how old people are who are taking Rivaroxiban, my fiance is only 35 and has a PE, he's been taking this drug for 2 months and over the past 2 weeks he's been really dizzy, feeling sick and feels like an old man! He hasn't been told why the PE developed and we have been to the doctors and A and E about the side effects and all he's been given is anti - sickness and anti - dizziness pills, any advice would be amazing.

Your fiance's GP should certainly test him for Antiphospholipid Syndrome which was the cause of a DVT in my thigh last year.  I was prescribed Rivaroxaban and the immediate side effects experienced were haemorrhaging in one eye, headaches and severe breathing difficulties.  GPs did not recommend changing to another anticoagulant and, for reasons known only to them, ignored the debilitating effects the drug was having on me until finally I was given a lung function test and prescribed two long acting inhalers.   After nine months, I decided to stop taking it after I experienced  vomiting and abdominal pains which proved to be a sensible decision as an endoscopy showed a gastric ulcer amongst other digestive problems.

Rivaroxaban (Xarelto) has only been in use for a few years and, although approved,  trials are still being carried out and as there is no way of reversing any bleeding that may occur, it isn't the safest option although doctors are quite happy to prescribe it as there is no need to carry out INR tests.  Your fiance should certainly be given a choice of other anticoagulants.  Hope all goes well.

Hey, just a quick update, fiance went to see his anticoagulant specialists today and he has been given a choice of changing to Apixaban or Dabigatran.....We've decided to try Apixaban first and hopefully the side effects won't be anything like Rivaroxiban.

Natasha I had VERY bad experience while taking Xarelto (brand name for rivaroxibam=n .I had had a mastectomy 12 years ago ALL was fine until I took xarelto..then i developed a hemotoma around my breast implant ( I am s=cetrtain was caused by internal bleeding of Xarelto. There are MANY law suits and MANY doctors are unaware still about the side effects of the newer anticoagulants even Plavix (not an anti coag but suposed to prevent stroke..) Since I need an operation to remove the now v=badly deformed breast iimplant ALSO a tooth exptracion I would prefer the oNLY newer drug which has a antidote of a bleed occurs during an operation (or at any other time ) So I am now on apixiban,,But woould prefer the ONLY newer anticoag with an antidote (In case of a bleed during tooth extracion(also needed or any other operation. The name ot the drug with an antidote is called Diabigrtran so maybe you should also try that one but first ask your specialist as many GP's are very un informed as to who and for what should these drugs be perscribed ..Just at thought ,,I don't think he should be having severe side effects on any drugs.>Warfarin is the older more often used for AFIB but it takes more blood tests to adjust the doses BUT it Does have an antidote (a shot of Vitamin K if a bleed occurs) Good Luck

Hi. I took Rivaroxiban for 6 months after my PE at 40. It gave me a bad stomach but I had no dizzyness. I've just stopped taking it and now I'm on Apixaban but it is making me feel really dizzy and I get bad episodes where I feel I'm going to fall over, my vision gets blurry and I can't talk properly. The last two symtons last about 10 minutes but the dizzyness stays for a couple of hours. How is your fiance getting on with Apixiban? I've heard there is a third drug and I'm going to see if that is an option for me.

Hi, being on the Apixaban hasnt helped with the dizziness, sickness, headaches or constant fatigue, he has finally decided to go on long term sick as he can't drive his truck whilst he is feeling like this and the symptoms are getting worse not better, doctors say his symptoms have nothing to do with the Apixaban but he was never like this before so we are going to look into trying warfarin, a bit of a pain with all the INR checks but whilst he's off work, it's the perfect time to give it a go, he's sick to death of feeling ill and nobody seems to be able to help him!!

Hello Natasha ,   For AF I have been  on Warfarin and Bisoprolol for nearly five years > I'm self - monitoring and have no known side effects but for your fiance's PE one of the three main NOACs ( anti-coagulant ) would be prescribed .. A friend was on Exaralto  ? Rivaroxaban with same symptoms . He switched to another NOAC (non-monitored) and felt instantly better . ( think it was Apixoban ) Good luck

Hi Natasha I'm currently at taking rivaroxaban too im 32 next week and was diagnosed with PE after going to a and e with chest pain, they did scans and found clots in my lungs, I'm waiting to see a haemotologist in 2 months to try and get to the bottom of it but I must say am getting more and more anxious about what the cause could be! I'm also haveing headaches and severe dizzy spells and am itchy and so tired all of the time I have 3 children to look after and it's really taking the life out Of me...

Hi Katrina, really sorry to hear about your PE, the aftermath of which has been awful for my fiance. He has changed his blood thinner to Apixaban now and the headaches, sickness and dizziness have reduced a little but not enough for him to go back to work. He has had a 2nd CT scan which shows his clots are almost gone, he's had an echocardiogram which shows there has been no damage to his heart. He has had tests with the haematologist to see if he has that sticky blood condition (we are waiting for the results of that) as his PE was unprovoked.....after all these reassurances that my fiance is quite healthy now he is still suffering terribly with what we think are stress and anxiety symptoms. He has seen a counsellor who has tried cognitive behavioural therapy but this hasn't worked, he's now on mirtazapine to help him calm down and sleep as the headaches are so bad that he spends most of his day upstairs in bed watching TV. After numerous trips to the GP'S and A & E he has finally been given an appointment for an MRI scan to make sure there is nothing wrong with his brain that could be causing the headaches....we are at a total loss at the moment because nobody seems to want to help unless we pay to go private....the stress and worry that the PE has caused is enormous and I really hope you have a good support next work to help you get through this, especially with having 3 children to look after....if u want to discuss anything with us regarding your condition or just how your feeling, feel free to get in touch

    Hi Natasha,

My daughter had PE back in July this year and she has been on Rivaroxaban since then. She was only 14 years old and tests have been carried out and all came back negative, no underlying problem whatsoever. She had PE after a long haul flight. She has experienced nose bleeds and headaches. She is also extremely tired, at times feels sick and her periods are incredibly heavy to the point we had to give her extra medication. It has been very hard for all of us, but we are trying to stick to Rivaroxaban as all other anticoagulants have much worse side effects and difficult to deal with. Warfarin and other types of anticoagulants are much worse! If he can, he should try to stick to Rivaroxaban. I hope this helps!
