I so sympathise bob.  I had terrible reactions to almost all the meds I've been prescribed and in the end some of the side effects were worse than the problem being treated.  I have severe OA in both thumb joints and on bad days it means I can hardly move my hands at all without excrutiating pain.  I've ditched all the toxic meds - I have an intolerance to any opiates and the anti inflamms were wrecking my stomach.  Continued steroid use is so bad I wouldnt even consider it.  I take curcumin as an anti inflammatory (its the active ingredient in turmeric) and B12 and magnesium.  I also recommend meditation.  There are some specifically designed for pain relief, eg mindfulness.  There is a lot of info online about it and there are vid clips on youtube which are helpful.

Have a try at a pharmaceutical free period for a while and see if they were really making your life better or worse.  Given the chance the body really can do a lot to heal itself.  I'm not evangelical about natural remedies but I couldnt stand being so ill with all the toxic chemicals I was being given.

I hasten to add that I do understand that for some conditions, medication is a life saver and as I'm not a medical professional I wouldnt dream of telling anyone what they should and shouldnt take.  I can only speak to my own experience and the hell I've gone through with some prescribed meds.  RA is a particularly nasty condition and I'm sorry to hear of your diagnosis Bob.  Maybe it wouldnt be too much high risk for you to take a break from pharmaceuticals for a few months and explore other ways of helping with the condition, particularly the steroids which can cause so much subsidiary damage.  Good luck and I really hope you find something effective without having to rattle with so many pills. smile

Have you had a conversation with your doctor about the number of meds you're on?  Some of them, as you know, have to be tapered off carefully to avoid bad consequences (prednisone I'm looking at you!).  If your doctor isn't much help a sympathetic and knowledgeable pharmacist may be able to give you some guidance.

Have you faound any non-med strategies to help with pain and joints?  Do you get enough rest?
