I know doctors typically prescribe gabapentin. You may also need a bigger dose of what they prescribed or perhaps it takes a while to take effect?

Another alternative people say helps is alpha lipoic supplement, no prescription needed.

Lastly, anything you can do to increase activity, exercise, brisk walking, swimming and also try to avoid sugar and four (basically low carb diet).

    Hi Marie,

You don't say how long you have been on the medication? I am new to nerve pain, and it has taken weeks to get the medication right. I have been prescribed amitriptyline for nights. I have found that helpful. Also meditation has helped me sometimes, just to calm my mind. Nerve pain is so awful and can be so depressing. I do hope you find a solution. Being tired just makes everything seem harder.

    Best wishes

Hi Marie, I suffer nerve pain and take Gaberpentin and Amitriptyline at night which helps with sleep. I hope you soon get the meds right, it does take a while for them to get into your system.

Hi Marie, Its a constant battle with nerve pain i know. I have suffered for many years also as there is no cure. I have also gone round in circles with the medications. I have nerve pain at the moment in my left knee due to many operations which have damaged my nerves. I have also had nerve pain in other parts of my body at other times, including the jaw. I must admit that thou i am prescribed 3 x 300 mg of gaberpentin i try to manage on less because of gaining weight. I am also taking co codamol at the moment. It's a case of finding the right medications and dosage. I use an electric blanket befor sleep which can help. Go back to your GP and ask for a review of your medications. You could try a health tablet to help with sleep but check first as they are not always compatable with some medications. As most of them contain valarium i find they make me sick and give me heartburn. Sorry i cannot help much because its different for everyone. We are all in the same boat but at least we can support others on this forum.

      Elizabeth.

Did you consult with a pain management specialist, or neurologist? Have they done an MRI?  Have they tried any diagnostic ablations (nerve blocks)? EMG tests?

I have been suffering with nerve damage in my feet and legs for over 10 years now. This may sound a bit odd but i wear pure wool knee socks/stockings to bed at night and it helps out tremendously. I do not know why this works and have now found anybody that can explain why it works, but it does help and the socks have to fit loose and not tight to help. Also look into Clonazepam to take the edge off the pain because i also take this med. I have tried taking Gabapentin but all i did was sleep all the time......not good.
