    Greg,

Umm, not sure what you are saying happened.

Did you go into hospital for 8 days to have a robotic surgery to remove your prostate? During the operation, something happened to your kidney(s) and bladder and your bowel was punctured. Now you have no bowel movement at all, but a lot of gas.

What did the doctor's at the hospital advise? How did they repair your bowel? Did they say to eat light meals and IF, after x days, with no bowel movement, return to hospital?  After robotic surgery, bloating and gas a problem for several weeks.

There are quite a few guys who recently had their prostates removed via robotic surgery. I am sure some of them will repsond here to let you know what the recoveery process will be like.

Wow Greg, your surgeon doesnt sound that brilliant. How many had he performed this way? My husband had Robot assisted prostatectomy on 9th November. Was out within 2 days. Bowels were an issue he was taking lactolose and senna. Took him around 5 days to go. I made sure he had plenty of fresh veg and drank lots of water. Lentil soup seemed to work best. Also remember you are not moving around as much so bowels will be sluggish. Waterworks still a problem during the day when walking around etc but improving. Hope you heal soon. X

Auntiebeanie, you sound as you are looking after your husband very well. Nice.

I did some checking and found it is "common" for bowel perforation issues during robotic surgery...sort of in the relms for 20-25% of the time...AND..is considered one of those things and not mal practise.

Ummm, the prostate removal is enough to get over as well as adding the bowel perforation recovery as well. I agree, the surgeon did not sound too great to me either.

Thanks Geoff. There is a risk as they say of perforating bowel but everything else that went wrong in his surgery doesnt sound brill. X

I just want to say that it really wasn't the surgeons fault I didn't realize I was going to have that much gas and they wanted to keep me for observation until my stomach without my stomach was extended a whole lot because the gas and they did not let me leave only because of that reason,

My stomach was very extended I had to see a gastroenterologist to make sure I didn't have a blockage when they found out I don't have a blockage I just have to walk and get ready to release all this gas I'm feeling good today and hope for a speedy recovery

I was on a liquid diet for 5 days starting to eat regular food today and it feels pretty good I'm going to take it slow though

Thank you now everything is just starting to come around I didn't anticipate none of the above actions for the bowels and the kidneys they kind of shut down temporarily and have to drink a lot of fluids and a lot of walking to get the gas out of my system it's been 9 days now and it's starting to leave feeling pretty good everything else is perfectly fine just a little problem a little pressure in there but I guess it is what it is thank you anyway

I do not follow your post.

But having undergone robotic surgery in August, stayed 3 nights in hospital and  I can say that it took me 5 days to get a bowel movement. The tummy is bloated with gas and that takes 10 days to go away. The gas is used by the surgeon to get the best view in the abdomen.

I cannot comment on your bowel damage. But I would ask the urologist for an pinion and also see a bowel specialist for a second opinion.

Please explain what happened to your kidneys.

They say that creaptions was high and that because of surgery they had to get them down and needed more fluids basically they in a range niw they did take away the jackson round bulb today is the first day I can shower I'm passing a lot of gas now I think they said I have something called alias it's something where your bowels go dormant during the surgery

      I see, interesting.

For those whose bowels were not disturbed by surgery and do not have a movement after 3 days, it is common to take heavy duty laxatives eg Movicol.

I am not sure why bowel movements are delayed post robotic surgery, but guess it has something to do with the gas being pumped into the abdomen and the fact that it takes up to 10 days to deflate.

In your shoes, given what happened to yen bowel, before treating the constipation with laxatives, I would ask the urologist if laxatives should be used.

He the one that gave it to me stool softener 2 times a day and milk of magnesia at night it's starting to come around now I still got it 80% cure I still got a little gas on this the 11th day

Ok, but note that stool softener is not a laxative. It is considered an optional extra. If the milk of magnesia works then good else change to strong laxatives and make that change sooner rather than later.

Thank you now I need to start eating solid food so I can get my bowels a little bit more texture right now it's still kind of loose and I'm making a lot of bowel movements but I think I'm empty it out now and I think I'm going to start with solid food what do you think

No. Solid food is not the Ewr to get regular stools. You should stick to semi solid foods eg steamed vegetables, boiled potatoes etc. Do not start on heavy foods like steak or chicken until the laxatives have started to work and your stomach has expelled all the gas.

Sorry, the autocorrect in my iPad made a mistake. In the post above I meant to say "solid food is not the answer to regular stools".
