DVT and Cellulitis

About 10years ago I started getting cramp in My right calf at night which was when I moved in a certain position then about 3years ago My left calf started to swell up during the day until I got home from work I changed into trainer socks anwithin about 20 minituite the swelling went down (if i pulled My ancke sock there would be a deep crease where the top of the soock elastic was.

I add that about 2 years ago I started to get porisis patches of itchy parts around the same ankle until last year January I was rushed to hospital with cellulitis after spendind two days shivering and being sick I was put on antibiotics in hospital for one week after 2 courses at home the rash went but i needed a compression bandage kit wrapped around from the knee down to the foot for a week which when removed by the nurse at My doctor the swelling had gone down.

A week later the swelling returned so I just thought it was fluid retention after the cellulitis and did not think anymore.3 months later I had a phone call from a consultant saying they had a note attached to the scan of my leg (for cellulitis) which had not been picked up when the scan was done.

The consultant told me to get tohospital immeadiatly for another scan of which I it was found I had a blood clot at the rear of the knee. Since then I have been taking Rivoxiban 20 mg until the end of February of which I will need another scan.

I it possible for an operation toremove this clot I have seen various operations to clear the vein although this has not been mentioned as yet by any doctor or specialist.

Any help would be most appreciated as I dont know what to expect and I write this whilst pondering of the outcome.

    My first DVT, some 28 years ago at the age of 40, was similar to yours - a clot behind my right knee.  Surgery was not possible.  This is a difficult area to access and the clot was too deep seated.  I was on intravenous heparin for five days and hospitalised for a week.  I was on warfarin for six months, during which time I was told that the vein would form its own pathway to bypass the clot.  However circulation in the right leg remained poor and about 15 years later this resulted in painful unlcers on the inside of the ankle.  

    I had another DVT last February. this time two clots, one in the thigh and one in the calf of my left leg.  My treatment this time has been entirely as an out-patient, just anti-coagulant medication. Surgery was never mentioned.  I now remain on warfarin for life.  Both legs tend to swell during the day.  I wear the recommended Grade II compression hosiery.

    I hope for a good outcome for you, Mark, and that they can operate to remove your clot.  Best wishes.

    Hi Mark, from what nunderstand they have a two week window to clear a clot before it hardens & turns to scar tissue also some clots are too small & they'll only operate if it's quite an extensive clot. Most clots are reabsorbed into the body.

    Mine was from my ankle into my pelvis so I had the thrombolysis procedure to clear the clot because I was in danger of losing my leg. Any one who has a clot I would say ask about a procedure to clear it if possible.

    I know there are ways to open up a occluded vein nowadays but again his doesn't work for everyone. Are you I. A lot of pain with your leg & was you given stockings to wear?

      I HAVE NO PAIN MY CALF IS SLIGHTLY ABOUT 1 INCH BIGGER THAN THE OTHER i dont wear commpressin stockings as they make my calf musule pain but thanks for you concern
