Myringitis and deafness

hi all, getting a bit worried. Have had an episode of Myringitis and am on treatment with Gentamicin ear drops. Problem began last Monday but I had a sinus problem before that. I am taking anti biotics now for the sinus issue.

Problem is I still can't hear properly in that ear. It is driving me crazy. Off and on still a bit of pain but the hearing issue is the really scary bit of it. I have a droning noise in my ear ....so tinnitus....but very little return of hearing after 5 days of treatment. Anyone else had this type of infection and know what I can expect. Thanks

    Hi

6 months ago I had sudden fullness in my right ear after having a congested cold virus and tinnitus also very sensitive to loud noises. Had mri, hearing test, antibiotics, steroids and when to see a ent specialist I have had no improvement and have been told the nerves in my midle ear have been damaged due to the virus and if it hasn't healed by now it's not likely to. Hope this doesn't happen to you 🤐 Tash

Oh dear. This is what I am worried about. Did you get any treatment straight away? I was given drops and antibiotics. Thanks for replying. Sorry to hear about your situation. X

      Hi Margaret

I went to the doctors straight away and they put me on antibiotics, then steroids and I tried ear drops then tried some medication called vergo nothing worked 🙁

Oh dear. Well on my way now to ent. Let's see what they have to say. A week on and feel like I am under water. Ear feels like it needs to pop. Is that how yours feels?

Yep my ear always feels like it needs popping and my good ear too think it is trying to balance things out. Good luck with ent did you have a hearing test first? They got me to have one before I went to ent and before my mri.

    margaret;

Sorry to hear about your issue, but if you had what I had it could take upwards of 9 months till most of your hearing is restored.

Short version.  Started out as one night went to bed ok, in middle of night ear pain in one ear and a feeling of fluid build up.  Rolled over and went back to sleep.  Next morning, both ears sore and 95 % hearing loss.  Also had sinus drainage and heavyness in the chest.  Next day went to urgent care.  Chest infection and dual ear infections. 2 months later, multiple urgent care doctors, mutiple doses of oral antibiotics and even seeing my own Primary care physician I was finally told that my hearing was gone and to except it.  I asked for a ENT referral and 2 months later had 90% of my hearing back.

It was never said if it was a BACTERIAL or a FUNGAL Ear infection, but I would believe it was A FUNGAL ear infection, and antibiotics don't work on those.  .

If you are seeing an ENT and you have already seen a GP you are doing the right things.  Yet if you are not getting the answers you want or feel they are not working in your best interest, see out a different ENT.  (Just my opinion).

Ok. Thanks for your input both of you. I haven't had a hearing test yet. I went back to ent yesterday and they said I have to continue droos for 10 more days. Said blisters haven't healed yet. They said I should get my hearing back but let's face it...they don't know for sure. Very fed up with it but living in hope it will come back. They also say drops have totally coated my eardrum and that us one of reasons I can't hear properly. Worried it won't come back.

Hi there this is my first time on these boards. I unfortunately just had this bullous myrinigits happen to me on 2 Friday’s ago (so just over a week now) and I still have the fullness and what I think is hearing loss? I can HEAR, but it’s very muffled and slightly distorted in that ear. For example if I hold my phone to my ear with a song playing, the persons voice is higher in the affected ear. Weird. The feeling of it needing to pop and the fullness is bothering me a lot too. Did this resolve for you? I am so scared right now. I am 34 years old with a little daughter (she was the original one sick and I caught a particularly nasty sickness from her that turned into this) anyway, I’m super afraid right now and hoping that this resolved for you eventually. Thanks.

Hi Sara yes I am happy to tell you my hearing came back fully. I am back to normal...took a time. Much longer than they said. Did you get drops which covered your ear drum ? Think in the end thry were causing the muffled hearing. There was a coating on my ear drum. Eventually worked it's way out.

Thank you so much for responding! I am so happy to hear that. Yes, I only took the drops for 4 days. It has been about 2 since stopping them. My eardrum had a tiny pinhole in it as well. The ENT thinks that healed before I saw him (almost healed) but he prescribed so much stuff. I’m unable to tolerate steroids which he wanted me to do Flonase nasal spray and I didn’t do it. I was curious if you were given anything like that? Currently I am on cefdinir antibiotic and saline nasal spray. I called the office today, as it’s been about a week since seeing him. Waiting to hear back. I’m just very nervous that he’s going to be mad that I didn’t do the Flonase but I can not tolerate steroids. I was on them a few years ago with eye inflammation and I got cataracts at 31 years old. Already had that surgery and I’m a glaucoma suspect as well. So I have many strikes against me with steroids. Hope this can resolve without the NEED for them.  Did you take steroids for it?

hi Sara, no I didn't take steroids. I have to say though that I believe sinus issues caused this. I have chronic inflammatory sinus issue (it's all linked to auto immune disease for me, ears always problematic too). So clearing my sinuses helped but I didn't do that with steroid spray. It doesn't work for me. But was given saline nasal spray which worked a treat. Prescribed for me by a good doc it was a sea salt spray. Fantastic. And also had anti biotic treatment. First time I went back it hadn't cleared so had to use the drops for longer. No perforation. But they did a hearing test to establish if there was nerve damage and said no. Said hearing should come back. Seemed to take forever...can' t even remember how long but weeks. So frustrating. Then one day (sorry for gross detail here) felt a 'shifting' inside my ear...thought what is that! A coating of the hardened ear drops came out of my ear. Awful. But god the relief! No more deafness. Did they test your hearing? I am normal now in terms of hearing and dread that ever happening again. My sinus issues are, as I said continuous so I worry it will come back. Horrid and so painful.

See you've had eye inflammation too. Do you have something similar to me?? I've had eye inflammation before too. Auto immune related too.

Oh dear I am so sorry to hear of these ongoing issues. I can so relate. I have not been diagnosed with anything but my current doctor and I are on the path looking for reasons why I got the eye inflammation to begin with (I currently now only experience it randomly through the month) I get episcleritis flare ups. The steroid that caused my cataracts was Durezol. I was on it for MONTHS. The dr was terrible. Anyhow, my current dr thinks I may have hyperthyroid disease and possibly even Graves’ disease (autoimmune thyroid problem)  as my levels are reading at the low end of normal, but some other tests came back with inflammation response and I present with many signs (underweight even though I have an appetite, nervousness, random insomnia, heart palpitations that get pretty bad (130 beats per minute resting) and my dr said Graves’ disease can go on for years before a diagnosis and it’s very tricky. Ugh.  Some people wth Golden Health don’t know how lucky they are. Like you, I pray this never comes back. I have not had a hearing test yet. I pray so hard that my nerves were not affected. I can hear out of the ear but it’s very muffled unless I hold my phone close to my ear, or if my daughter speaks directly into it then I can hear. It’s very weird as I had perfect ears before so it’s hard to accept hearing loss on top of my already young cataract experience, ugh. Well I am glad you didn’t have to use steroids. I honestly can’t tolerate them. With my hyperthyroid symptoms - it revs them up to a point I can’t function and I have a 4 year old I need to be there for! Do you have a diagnosis/name for your autoimmune disease?

One more thing... did you experience a feeling of fullness on that side?

hi there. Yes the graves is interesting and your symptoms. It is suggestive of something like Lupus to be honest. I have Behcet's syndrome. Similar to Lupus and Sjogren's but distinctive because of specific ulceration which goes with it. The other symptoms all overlap to be honest. I have had the palpitations, eye inflammation, insomnia chronic sinus and ear problems. And more, inflammatory bowel problems. All at the moment are quiet after long treatment I underwent. My most recent problems were pain in my feet and legs which decided to flare up this year. I have been given something called hydroxychloroquine which has settled that and also the sinus issue which is great.

If I were you I'd get an ana blood test done to esr and crp to look specifically at inflammatory markers and possible underlying auto immune issues. It might help. Get a referral to a good specialist who might understand.

and yes always a feeling of fullness in my ears yes. Before the myringitis yes and my hearing went dull and ear started to bleed! Nice. x

Oh wow, didn’t think of lupus for me but I will look into those tests with my doctor. How scary all of this can be. I’m sorry that you are dealing with these issues. I can totally relate.

My ear was not full prior to the Myringitis but after the bleed happened, and the hearing went dull- I also got a feeling of fullness on that side that sometimes feels worse than other times. Did you experience fullness AFTER the Myringitis as it healed? If so, about when would you say it cleared up? You have been so helpful and I am so thankful.

Yes I know it can be scary but do remember like everything else you can have milder and more aggressive forms of these disorders so bear that in mind. Yes I experienced fullness after the myringitis as it healed. Was a very unnerving condition as it made sounds a bit odd to me as well as being dull and from time to time I'd get a seasick feeling as my hear clicked and cleared and tried to heal. I was very odd. I can't remember the timing to be honest but as much as 6 weeks after the infection before it got back to normal. Maybe longer. I mean weeks. I'd given up hope of getting my hearing back and was just about to ask for another referral to ent when it suddenly came back.
