Whiplash why did my vertigo become more severe.

I would appreciate any info regarding this. I have suffered from vertigo for 40 years. Three years ago I had a type of whiplash injury (not a car accident) I woke up the morning after unable to move and my vertigo and balance became worse, I was unable to move my neck for months.

I've read where neck injuries will cause it and realignment helps

Having had a whiplash injury (drunk driver going the wrong way down the highway) I can identify. This was my first introduction to benign positional vertigo, This happens when the crystals inside your cochlea that form on the ends of the hairs lining the cochlea get knocked loose. They now float around in side the cochlea and anytime they brush against those hairs (usually when you turn your head or lay down) it causes vertigo. The injury that happens to all of the ligaments and muscles caused so much discomfort I was wearing a neck collar for 2-3 weeks and kept having a return of pain for months after. I do not know if this injury precipitated the onset of menieres and the episodes of vertigo never entirely went away so I did not recognize until I lost my hearing that something different was happening. So far, I have not found a lot of research on this disease as to causes or even what kind of follow-up routine care that I need to be doing. I will keep looking though.

If you lost your hearing read a lot here and get to an ent they may also do an MRI to rule out other possibilities

Thank you for your concern, my hearing did return after I started treatment with a diuretic, although I do not have a baseline to know if it returned completely.

Hi Donna. Yep I was also in a neck brace. I woke up the day after injury unable to stand up. I was in so much pain and spinning out, I couldn't bend even in the slightest for a year.

Those crystals in your inner ear repositioned. You might want to go to a hearing and balance center.

The trauma may have affected the inner ear to some extent.

Hello. Yes my left ear was affected, my hearing became more impaired and I had a feeling of constant pressure, also a numbness tht lasted for months. I was not able to move my neck at all because of the pain which was sickening, and the vertigo was incredible. I have suffered with vertigo most of my life but this injury caused it to worsen so severely.

You need to find a good physiotherapist. I used to have vertigo until I had a physiotherapist work on my neck. One treatment, and none since. Been 9 months with no vertigo episode.
