Damaged meniscus cartilage and foot pain

My right knee, which has been painful since January, has been diagnosed as damaged meniscus cartilage. I am schedule for keyhole surgery in a month's time.

The knee pain is growing steadily worse and now I have discomfort in my inner calf, ankle, foot arch and particulary the two toes next to my big toe. The inner calf, ankle and foot arch feel stiff which I am attributing to lack of exercise, it being increasingly painful to walk, something I usually do a great deal of and which may have caused the meniscus damage in the first place.

The toes aren't painful when I rest but very painful indeed when I stand and walk. Is the knee and toe pain connected? Damaged cartilage pressing on a nerve? Anyone else experienced this?
