Flu symptoms starting over after 5 days??

It started with the phlegm in my throat that I couldn't clear, then the cough and a severely sore throat. I've had a fever and one day a terrible headache. I have been taking Tylenol and Motrin which does make me more comfortable. I will feel decent during the day now but at night I get the chills at bed time and wake up in the middle of the night burning up. The throat clearing was gone by the third day. Now on day 5 it is back and the cough is starting up again too. I feel like its starting all over. Do you think I should just let the fever ride out instead of treating it each time so that my body can fight it off? I am 47 and no major medical issues.

My husband has it too but he will hardly take anything.
