Hip replacement 11 months on.....

After 11 months post op. I am still experiencing groin, thigh and some hip pain. Consultant suspects an inflamed tendon and this week I am having a ultrasound guided cortisone injection. Has anyone else had one and was it successful in relieving pain?

Mary.

    Hi Mary

I am only nearly seven weeks on but have had groin pain from day one I was hoping that this would ease with time. Have you always had pain in the groin. I am seeing the specialist on Monday.

      Hi Dawron,

Yes I have had groin pain almost from day one.I did expect some pain in the early days but not to go on as long as it has. Hopefully I will get some answers this week , hope you do too. Take care, seven weeks still early days.

      Best wishes. Mary.

Sometimes the hip flexor muscle gets tight and feels like a really bad Charlie horse. I had it and found icing it for 20 minutes every 4 hours and resting it elevated. It's usually temporary until the muscle heals from being over stretched during surgery.

I also have groin tightness radiation round the buttock of THR leg - this tightness started after 3 and a half months - physio. told Consultant who decided to wait until 5 months, and if no better, fr me to go back. Had an MRI which showed nothing wrong - hip replacement joint excellant - I saw this for myself - symptoms indicated it could be illiopsas tendinopathy -was sent for an image guided steriod injection in my ground and told to go back after 5 weeks . No change after this and he asked me if I was prepared to have a consultation with one of his colleagues who specialises in groin and hip displasia, which I did. He went through all the MRI picture scans with me and to an untrained eye like myself, it was evident that nothing showed up. He also was puzzled and sent me to a sports physio at Hampden Football sports clinic.

I have had one consultation there, and after many examinations and telling him what excercises I was doing each day - I had had 10 physio treatents after THR - he said it was evident that I had been doing too many each day - and instead of gaining strength in my leg, I had done the exact opposite. Have been given two excercises to do and have to go back to using the stick to take the strain of operated leg. Go back on Monday. My body has suffered 18 major operations - a lot of trauma - and the THR was the 19th operation. My Consultant said at the time it would take a bit longer for me to recover because of all the operation traumas I had previous sufferred. However, onwards and upwards - I shall now do what I am told and not try to 'push the boat' out too fast. It is evident that too much is as bad as too little.

Hi Jean, I have just read your post , what a torrid time you must be having after so many operations. Do hope this latest regime of therapy helps you at last.

I had an ultrasound guided cortisone injection last week haven't noticed a great deal of improvement so far and am having a second one a week today. Apparently inflammation on adductor and more suspected on another so hope this second one sorts it out. Coming up to 12 months since the op had hoped to be better than this. Am getting pain in buttock and groin especially when walking outside.

      Hope you improve very soon.

Whereas I do agree it is probably you tendon, I don't believe it is what we would think of classically "inflamed." During surgery they have to dislocate you hip, which means manipulating your leg in angles it is not used to. It is during surgery that leg manipulation that caused an injury to your tendon. Think of your tendon being injured. It got stretched during the surgery causing little tears in the tendon. That never healed so now your tendon has scar tissue on it. If it isn't healed after 11 months you will probably need an iliopsoas tendon release (another small surgery).

The ultrasound guided cortisone injectionwill probably work for around 3 weeks, then the pain will come back. To this pain coming back is confirmation of the injured tendon.
