I've had chronic neck/shoulder pain for 4 year does anyone know what it could be?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me. 4 years ago I woke up with a still neck, it was really sore and I couldn't tie my hair back as I couldn't lift my arms high enough to do so. At the time I thought I had just slept funny so just kept going on as normal but over time the pain got worse so I saw my doctor and they said I may have frozen shoulder, and gave me some ibuprofen gel which didn't help. I started to take tablet ibuprofen and paracetamol together. I went back after about a month and they just kept saying my neck and shoulder felt fine and they couldn't see what was wrong.. but my dad told them he wanted me to have an xray at least. I had the xray and everything was fine. I was then sent to a specialist who sent me for an MRI scan and everything was also fine on that, and the doctor basically just told me that this pain might go away as quickly as it came on. I've had this for 4 year now and it's brought me great anxiety with it which I struggle with too. Basically when my tablets have ran out (I take them everyday every 4-5 hours which is also worrying me as I don't want to take them anymore!) But when they run out and the pain comes back, my neck has a throbbing sensation, my arm becomes really heavy and hard to lift and I have trouble moving my neck side to side.. its like a burning, spasm and it makes me cry in agony so I need to take more tablets. It's affecting my work and giving me stress and it's just awful. I'm only 21 years old so I've had this since I was 17. I was just wondering if anyone could please help me or try and explain what could be wrong with me? Thanks

I cannot tell you whats wrong but I've been suffering lately with the same type of symptoms.
mine started from a dislocated rib, once that was sorted I started to get terrible stiff neck, also clicking and cracking for over a year.
I was taking about 4000-5000mg of paracetamol a day
I've seen chiropractor, osteopath and physiotherapist and just could not progress. I had an xray on my neck and shoulder and it showed nothing.
About a month ago I had Low Level Laser Therapy and after one session I feel 95% better and havn't had a pain killer since
I'm going for a further 2 more sessions in a couple of weeks and I hope this will enable to train Kung Fu again
Low Level Laser Therapy I believe is a new type of treatment and not many places in the UK do it, I believe it started out with respect to race horses.
I'm under the impression the treatment regenerates the cells around the dead cells, dead cells cause the pain.
I would seriously recommend this treatment
also, my mother and aunty had this treatment on frozen shoulders and it worked for them
all the best
John
