Link: Measles and Stiff/Arthritic Joints???

Posted , 2 users are following.

I contracted the measles back in September.  One of the things that happened during that affliction was that my hands and feet swelled to the point of significant soreness.  Quickly after swelling subsided, the arthritis in my fingers became MUCH worse than it had ever been.  I'm still struggling with it in my right hand.  Have you ever heard of a link between the two conditions?

Thanks

Is it osteoarthritis that is the problem?

Infections, both viral and bacterial, can trigger the onset of autoimmune arthritis. One form is reactive arthritis in response to that infection which usually  goes into remission but there are other sorts which are due to immune system malfunctions and which can last much longer. I'm assuming you have seen your GP? And preferably a rheumatologist.

Hi Eileen.  I'd never heard of reactive/autoimmune arthritis before your reply..  I appreciate the enlightenment.

Definitely but exact mechanisms are not well understood.

Thanks Sparky.  The breadth of information available from the people on this forum is amazing.  It certainly puts the WebMD app to shame.
