Living with Meniere's

Posted , 5 users are following.

I have been suffering with tinnitus for about 5 years and have recently been diagnosed with Meniere's, which is a pretty daunting feeling. So far I have been given two different types of tablets Prochlorperazine 5mg and Bethahistine Diydrchloide 16mg to stop my dizziness, neither work. Does anyone take tablets that work or do they all just mask this feeling. I constantly feel I am going to fall over.

If betaserc does not work, the next step is intratympanic steroids.  But we need to confirm that this is indeed Meniere's.  Did you do an audiogram, and what were the results?

Different countries use different medications for Meniere's.  I take a diuretic (I'm in the US).  It helps with the fluid buildup in the inner ear which causes the vertigo, as it helps flush out sodium which causes fluid build up.  It works for me, along with the low sodium diet.  I then was prescribed diazapam (a mild sedative) to use before an attack.  It sedates the vestibular system.  I barely use that, but I am religious about taking the diuretic.  Do you see an ear, nose and throat specialist?  They are the ones who are the most 'up' on Meniere's treatment.

Yes I did have an earring test the specialist has written to my doctor and told him this is what I have along with Eustachian Tube Dysfunction. I think from reading other people's experiences my medication is not strong enough?

Have you seen a nurologist? I had several doctors tell me I had Meniere's. I was having brain seizures. The symptoms are similar. Tinnitus is not that big a deal after you learn not to listen. Mine is stereo and has been for years.

Get a brain scan. I do not know what the best test is now. Mine was an EEG.

There are good drugs to treat seizures.

    Good luck.

Betahistike takes time to work and in all probability you need a much higher dose. After seeing ENT consultant and having MRI scan to exclude other causes I was seen by an Aural Physiologist consultant who confirmed Meniere's. I had been started on Betahistine by ENT six weeks previously which had reduced the severe left ear Tinnitus to a tolerable level but had not stopped the attacks completely so my dose was increased to 48mg three times daily.

If not already done ask your doctor to refer you to a Aural Physiologist consultant who is up to date on Meniere's.

Like you I found that Stemetil (Prochlorperazine) did not work after the  third acute attack. It is an antispychotic drug and powerful sedative which I would prefer not to take again although I carry it with me in case of need along with Stugeron, an anti-emetic.

Thanks to high dose Betahitine I have not had an attack for over 21 months.

    Good luck.
