Low Ferritin, High Iron, how do I fix this?

Posted , 5 users are following.

My ferritin levels are 11 ng/mL (normal range is 15-77) and to fix this I am reading to take iron supplements, vitamin C, and all of these other things to increase iron, but my iron levels are 194 ug/dL (normal range is 27-159) and other places say to stay away from iron and vitamin C and anything that can increase your iron as this could be very dangerous.

How can I increase my ferritin levels while lowering my iron levels?

What are some possible causes of this?

Iron avidity. I had your same numbers about a year ago with high iron saturation and ferritin at 8. My gastro over bleed me for to many years. I would advise you to talk to your specialist first before taking iron. If your hemoglobin is low then that's a different story. But I had iron avidity and no one would listen until I started asking questions like yourself

    hi,

sorry i have to answer a question with a question but on the haem org au it says the following:

"Symptoms are caused by high levels of iron stored in the body.  One indicator of the level of iron stored is serum ferritin. If iron stores are high the serum ferritin level will be high, but serum ferritin levels can also be raised by other factors.  The normal range is 20 – 300 micrograms per litre (µg/L) for men."

May I ask your reason for saying that they normal range is 15 to 77 ug/L?

Some people have said that if you have HH then the ferritin should be lower but one would think that it would make this clear on HH web sites. Can someone please direct me to some legitimate web site that says if you already have HH then your ferritin should be 15 to 77.

    Maybe I'm missing something here?

    Thanks,

    David.

I have the same issue- my numbers are very similar and I am not being treated with phlebotomy- I just found out I have HH a little while ago. Was also wondering what causes high Iron but low ferritin.

I have a serum ferritin of 350ug/L and my doctors have not even referred to my Iron levels. I actually don't know what my iron level is.

I have seen 2 specialists and they say unless my s.f gets to 500 I shouldn't worry about it.

I am seeing another speacialist in 2 weeks time but at this time I am a little frustrated by the lack of clarity in this area. Maybe they have different ranges in Australia!

I feel perfectly well apart from my stiff hands at night time.

    d.
