meningitis and speech problems

I had meningitis ten and a half years ago. I was left with a serious speech impairment. Just wondered if there was anyone out there who had been, or was going through something similar. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,

I didn't have any speech issues, but I do have debilitating flu like symptoms every couple weeks ever since "recovering" recently. Tests keep coming back normal, but I struggle daily and feel awful. So I can relate a little bit as far as after effects. Have you had any luck with therapies?

Think a lot of people have had pretty poor after care. I've had years of speech therapy with no great effect, think I'm stuck with it now.

Wow, sorry to hear. Most of the time my current symptoms are brushed off as part of the recovery process. I've read alot of awful stories, but still wonder if it's normal to be bed bound every other week after supposedly recovering. Hard to find good specialists...

I had Viral Encephalitis in 2001 it's different than meningitis but I had speech problems as well for one of my problems. I had 2 years of PT, SPEECH AND OT therapy. The OT helped best my specific problems with speech were:. Garbled speech, I knew what I wanted to say but I couldn't say it lead to extreme frustration to communicate, stuttering speech, hearing people shouldn't throw stones at glass houses for instance I knew what it meant but I couldn't convey in speech. As an RN I took care of many patients but until i experienced it I could never never comprehend what my patients were going through. I'm here if u need me.

Hi there. I also have very garbled speech. I seem to have no control over the speed of my speech- it all just comes out in a rush. I also struggle with certain sounds and words. I find it all very frustrating. I had years of speech therapy- which seemed to get me to a certain point but no further. Now it seems it's just something I have to live with, but it's destroyed my confidence and to a large degree my life too.

Hi.  I am just recovering from viral meningitis and encephalitis.  I am at three weeks out. I have had major speech issues and the doctors keep saying that isnt common but in my quick research it shows to be so.  I have some memory issues from the first few weeks but it is mainly the continued headaches and the speech issues that persist.  What type of doctor is best to see?  Do you have any idea?  I am a child therapist and my speech is imperative to my work.  It really is a hard thing to deal with, as you know.

Hi there. Don't think I'm in a position to give advice- except maybe what not to do. All I would say is to try and get to see a good speech therapist (there are some bad ones out there), and stick at it. Sorry I can't be more help.... You have my heartfelt sympathy and I wish you all the best in your recovery. Good luck.
