My Daughter Age 13 Months Suffer Middle Ear Effusion

Posted , 2 users are following.

My daughter (age:13 months) was diagnosed with middle ear effusion by specialist at local General Hospital since she 3 months old. She had done scheduled hearing tests since then and the results failed. Last 2 days, she had done half-way of VRA test (this was her second time doing VRA). The test was incompleted since she was crying heavily afraid/shocked of that dancing-doll inside black-box. So the health-officer can't conclude the result. But refering to her last VRA (age:9 months) her result was not at normal level. So the health-officer suggesting us to let her undergo minor surgery (Myringotomy and Grommet Insertion) a.s.a.p. As a wondering mother, I was thinking does the surgery really needed for my daughter? Need your expert advice regarding this matter. Because I had done some researches too regarding this diagnose. There are opinions that middle ear effusion is normal for kids below 2 years old. It will soon be completely recover as the kids growing up. However, not normal for kids above 8 years old. Please help me with advices whether to proceed or not with the procedure? Thank you.

    Hi nurfarhana

Its scary with little children being sick.  If it is a middle ear infection and fluid build up behind the ear drum you could try putting a musical tuning fork in the centre of her forehead.  This will drain the fluid.  It also makes you very dizzy as your ears empty.  I haven't found anyone else suggesting this as a fix but it worked for me.

I have looked up sound waves to drain ears and have not found any info on it.  Every option was surgery.

I found 1 other option which was pushing really hard on the roof of the mouth right up the back.  I don't know if it works as I haven't tried it.

Ask your doctor what he thinks before you try either of these especially as your child is so young.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help

Thank you leila29439 for your reply.

The doctor suspects that there is "water vapor" behind my daugther's eardrum. The believe only can be proven through surgery (as per said). Which me as a mother reluctant to do at the first place.

However, the idea of using a musical tuning fork onto her forehead is something never come accross  before. Is it that easy to find the musical tuning fork leila29439? If yes, I'm thinking of doing it at home. Thank you.

      Hi nurfarhana

I have ordered 2 tuning forks from the music store.  I don't know what note the doctor used on me.  The people at the store said that low notes vibrate slower while high notes vibrate quicker.  I have gone for middle C and 1 octave up C but will try the middle C on myself first.  I think that a slower vibration will be more gentle.

I'm not sure on how base and treble effect sound.

      Hi nurfarhana

I have new info for you.  See the Weber Test.

The tuning fork is 512 hz or 1 octave above middle C.

      Hope this helps
