I just had my prostate removed and am getting catheter removed Tuesday when should I start pelvic floor exercises. ? When should I start procedures that have to do with regaining sexual function.? Injections.? Vacuum pump? Is there a too early to start? Is there anyone out there that has knowledge on the subject and or personal experience.?

Don't they tell you?! Pelvics should start weeks before the op, and again as soon as catheter is removed..... Cialis three weeks later, and the pump another week or two later. Injections at maybe six months if nothing has happened. That's my programme anyway. I'm in the three months plus period now.....

    Mark

it is early days. You can restart your pelvic floor excerise since your catheter is removed.  As regards sexual function that first depends on weather you had nerve sparing or not. I had nerve sparing and had some mild erections whilst the catheter was still in. Everyone is very different and there are not hard and fast rules.

I would have have a chat with the nurse when the catheter is removed they should be able to  help you.

    all the best

Hey Mark     I am also waiting to have my prostatr removed. What kind of procedure was done on you? How was the side effects of the procedure? I am not real sure on thr info you requested but there is a lot of reading out there and your doctor knows best.

My procedure was a robotic nerve sparing. I have had the catheter in for 7 days now and I'm getting it out tomorrow and it is not fun. I am in some pain but Tylenol 650 every 4 hours is all I really need for it. As far as other side effects I suppose I won't find out until after I get the catheter out. I am alone however and am able to take care of myself without assistance.

Well today I have my office visit to find out what procedure I will have. I am a little affraid of both though. I kind of like my testies they have been with me for a lot time. I have a lot of question for my doctor so I will wait for them to be answered. Then make my choice. My wife was my testiced removed since they are not doing her any good. I had a vesectomy years ago. Now since we don't have sex anymore she just wants me to still be with her years to come. I kind of like that too.

Physiotherapists will say to start the pelvic floor exercises before surgery and return to them after the catheter is removed. No such exercises should take place when the catheter is in.

I started the PF exercises a week before surgery. After the catheter was removed I didn't care for them and now two weeks post surgery my incontinece is getting better.

Remember, after the catheter is removed,  to drink nothing after say 7pm nightly, so as to help you sleep without getting up to go to the toilet.

Buy yourself some pads to wear and place them in your underwear. Ideally buy several different level pads, as they have different absorption levels.

Place a high level pad in your underwear first thing in the morning and a lower level pad thereafter, when the first pad needs to be replaced.

I am 56 years old and had the procedure done in Omaha. So if you are 6 months out meaning 6 months after your operation... How are you feeling how is a sexual function? Incontinence?

I am good but no erection. I am beginning to think you at the age of 56 and me at the age of 58 will not get that back enough to have intercourse. I went to one of the best doctors in the world and looking back at it I think they all do about the same. They younger guys may get it back to they are satisfied with twice a month. I was having sex 3 time a week before the surgery. So I have some adjusting to do. Make sure you read up and get yourself a therapy program going.

    Hi Mark

The radiologist and hospital team should have provided you with a recovery plan which included this information. My surgeon and radiology doctors provided me with an extensive amount of information, including patient recovery groups, a wellness plan, and a hospital staff member contact if I had any questions. I thought that was the normal procedure for all cancer clinics. ( I am in a rurral community in Massachusetts, USA) I elected radiology and not surgery, but the clinic and staff are the same.  They gave me all the information I needed, including recovery informatiion.
