Neck incident causing several vision issues

Posted , 8 users are following.

About 6 weeks back, I turned my head to click my neck and felt a sharp pain around my left shoulder that radiated to the neck and the lower skull region. I am 40 years old male. My symptoms have been:

1. Pressure in the base of the skull

2. Excessive thirst

3. Drunk/floating feeling

4. Blurred vision

5. Light headedness

I was already working with a PT for a different issue and when I started getting these symptoms, I went in for another session which made it worse.

Over the last couple of weeks, things have gotten better. I am not taking medications and am trying to control the symptoms by taking rest, heat pads, accupuncture and a change in diet. I went into a primary care physician who did an X-Ray and blood work and mentioned that they look good. I saw a neurologist who has prescribed the following tests:

1. MRA of the head

2. MRI of the cervical spine

3. MRI of the brain

4. MRA of the neck

5. EEG

I got all the tests done and they came back as normal. My neurologist suggested I take magnesium and B2 and see a different Physical therapist. I started with the magnesium tablets.

Although my symptoms have started to get better I'm struggling with the following symptoms

1. Eye floaters

2. Sensitivity to light

3. Ringing in the left ear

Can anyone relate to be symptoms. Please help

    Hi there,

I notice your post is several days ago so hopefully by now you are feeling better.

I'm assuming you have had blood works to rule out diabetes (excessive thirst).

I have osteoarthritis in the neck and spine, early stages, and I have all of your symptoms apart from excessive thirst. I'm guessing they have ruled OA out for you.

Some neck problems do not show up on MRI's. I am not diagnosing you but the SCM muscles of the neck can cause all of your symptoms, tinnitus, eye problems, giddiness, TMJ, headaches, balance and more. The problem occurs with forward head posture, i.e., working on a computer, texting, looking up or looking down a lot in your job etc.

The suboccipital region c1 and c2 just below the base of the skull and top of the neck is made up of four main muscles. These muscles contract when you move your eyes back and fore. FHP makes these muscles contract causing tension and all of the symptoms mentioned. There are many exercises you can try, you can find them online. Chin tuck is one of them.

Let me know how you get on.

    Best wishes

      Thanks for your response.

Yes, they have ruled out OA for me. It's frustrating that no one has been able to diagnose the issue. I saw an opthalmologist and a retina specialist regarding my eye floaters. They checked for retinal detachment and said there's no issue there. Sudden appearance of floaters can cause a detachment of the retina. They weren't able to explain the cause for the floaters and the dry eyes.

I've been getting physical therapy done, but not seeing too much progress with my symptoms. I've heard about NUCCA and that they specialize in upper cervical problems. Do you recommend them? My understanding is that that they don't do manual adjustments.

    Hi again,

Unfortunately it is difficult to treat something when you don't know what that something is. I don't know enough about NUCCA to comment I'm sorry.

All of your symptoms can be related to suboccipital neck problems, some of which cannot be identified on MRI. I really recommend some of the short free videos I mentioned by the named doctor on youtube. I have watched many in relation to neck issues and they explain what goes on in your neck and shows exercises that can help. One you could start with is Occipital Percussion....Miracle Healing for Headaches, Neck Pain, Tinnitus. Explains many of your symptoms, dizziness, tinnitus.

I had eye floaters when I was stressed but they have gone now. I also get dry eyes but I put that down to wearing contact lenses.

Also, my symptoms were worse after PT and after watching some of these videos I realised that one particular exercise I was given to do actually makes my problem worse.

Let me know how you get on.

Thanks. How long did the eye floaters last before they were gone? Did you take any supplements for it? I've started taking Bilberry supplement as I've read that it might help with floaters. It's been a few weeks now with not much progress. I'll continue it for some more time.

Do you mind PMing me the name of the doctor that you mentioned? Your earlier post was updated to remove the name of the doctor.

I met the NUCCA doctor yesterday. During the first session, they took X-Rays of the C-Spine. They were pretty confident that they can help me. I am a little reluctant though as it may make the condition worse. I'll think about it a little more before committing to it. My PT has started focusing on the SCM, C1 area of the spine. Let's see how that goes.

    Hi,

Glad to hear your PT is starting with your c1, sounds like a good place to start.

My eye floaters come and go, at the moment I haven't any. I believe mine lasted for the length of time I had anxiety, so try not not worry about them, your eye specialists seems to be fine with it. I didn't take anything for them, maybe the odd eye drops for dry eyes for contact lens users, that's all.

I will send you a private email re the online doc.

I know how frustrating your symptoms are, I too have them, as mentioned, but I have cervical spondylosis.

I am not a med prof, I don't want to mislead you, I read a lot about cervical conditions, being an ex nurse I am trying to find solutions to my own problems. Forward head posture is the culprit though, for sure.

Hope all goes well with your PT.

Take care and try not to worry ?
