Numbing for Myringotomy?

Posted , 1 user is following.

Hey folks,

I'm looking for input from adults that have had ear tubes placed while awake (i.e., as an office procedure). I thought I could do it under general anesthesia, but my insurance changed and my new ENT says it's very difficult to get my insurance to pay for general anesthesia for this because adults tolerate it well.

My understanding is that there's some sort of topical chemical used to numb the eardrum, and I'm told it causes burning for several seconds. I've got some medical trauma and am concerned I might not be able to handle it. What's the process like, and how bad is it? I really want to improve my quality of life, but this feels too overwhelming right now...
