Pre op preparation

wondering from you on this forum if preparation exercis is a good thing before my op. Due to foot problems (chronic ulcers) I haven't been able to walk much for a long time but keep as active as I can otherwise. But am very limited for the last year or two due to my advanced OA. Would using an exercise bike for a few weeks before the op get my muscles prepared for the recovery from the op. I would appreciate any advice.

    By all means use the exercise bike, and get as much physical exercise as you can before the op.  It will certainly help your recovery.

    Yes Gossip, any exercise you can do beforehand will always be an added bonus. Upper body exercises are important also as we need strong arms to help lift ourselves up, down and around during those first few weeks after surgery.

    Anything you can do to strengthen your shoulder and thigh muscles would be good.

    Maybe a stationary bike or swimming. Those are less weight bearing. best to you.

    Hi Gossip - it is a good idea - Dawn is right to get your upper body strong too . as long as it doesn't hurt, so don't overdo it ... stationary  bike is, what I understand, one of the best exercises you can do pre-op and post-op - start slowly - not that I did it though ... I went to Physical Therapy before surgery so I could be in better shape - for some reason it turned out wrong - perhaps an overeager PT who put me on weight and rowing machines and it went down hill from there - and my own ego trying to please him and show him I could do it  (showing this 30+ guy that an old bird at 66 still has it - what was I thinking???) )--- so what I learned from this experience is to keep listening to your body and to build up, especially if you have been inactive for a while ....  take care - big hug

      Thank you Renee. I suppose it makes sense to strengthen the upper body too for using crutches after the op. All this info is really helpful. I'm seeing my gp today so will suggest a meeting with a physiotherapist to see what they suggest. I'm quite out of condition as I've been in so much pain for last few years, so slowly does it for me. Hugs back at you

    I would go to your doc and get advice from a physio as what is best for you - certainly strengthening the muscles will help in your recovery after the  op.

    Good morningsmile  I was advised to do some pre op exercises to strenghten the muscles around the hip and leg before my recent TRHR and it does help with recovery. The exercises were described in the physiotherapy booklet I was given.   I never used an exercise bike but did six simple exercises lying on the bed.....1.  ankle pumps

    2. buttock clenches (holding each clench for 5 seconds) 3. Press knee to the bed to tighten the thigh muscle and hold for 5 seconds each. 4. Knee raises - slide foot towards buttocks bending the knee. 5. Slide leg to the side keeping it straight and 6. Place a rolled up towel or pillow under the knee and raise the leg slightly holding each raise for 5 seconds.  All these excercises should be done 10-15 times each and are quite easy and gentle exercises.   I did them twice a day and it is important to keep them up after the op as well.  I bought an exercise bike when I had my knee replacements but found that unless you get a really good one they are hard to manage.  Ended up selling it on e-bay hardly used.

      Thank you Jill I was given a booklet with those exercises. It says they are the ones for after the op so it's good to hear I should be doing them beforehand too
