Hello to this forum.

I was stabbed last July, 30 times, very luck to have lived.  I spent weeks in special care unit in Hospital.  After the incident i started to feel the effects of anxietydepression and  constant worrying and being frightened. ive been taking Sertraline for years for depression and am on 150 mg a day.  i was also perscribe small doses of Diazipam 5mg a day.  I am quite a heavy drinker and am trying to cut down slowly.  Antway i went to my Doctors yesterday as my condition was gettin unimanigable to me.  i had cut down on diazipam to 2mg in morning.  So im chatting with my Doctor about i was feeling and she perscribed Propanaolol at 40mg 3 times dail or 4 times if i need it.  they also put my Diazipam up to 5mg 3 times a day.  The Doctor also perscribed me Pregabalin at 150 mg daily.  The Doctor says ive probably Got PTSD.  Well today i started taking all medicine perscribed.  Im worried about getting addicted to all these drugs but just have to try something.  i am having councelling also which hasnt helped really.  I still like a few beers, will this be ok do you think, as on label dony drink which most medication recomends.  I like to have 6 beers aday which has helped but i know im just self medicating.  I also take Thiamine , 100mg 2 times daily.  I am worried about becoming a zombie with all these powerfull drugs.  The mental health system had a 9 month waiting list for Trauma councelling and im still waiting, even my doctor says in my condition this is not acceptable and she got intouch with them to try to speed this up.  Anyway thanks for reading this and by the way my wife got 15 years for attempted murder, so this is my prodicament at moment, ill keep postin and let you know how this medication is affecting me.  Thanks again, Ronald.

    Hi Ronald,

First of all, sorry you had to go through any of that! I too got prescribed 40 mg of Propranolol a day and I take four tablets a day. It's the only medication I take. I have minor anxiety, but my issue stems from the random panic attacks all day. I find this medication helps a ton in getting rid of those.

I don't drink as much as you do every single day, but on the weekend (Friday, Saturday) I might have a few glasses of wine or beers. I don't know about the other medications, but I've never had any problems with Propranolol.

Also, propranolol is not addictive, one of the reasons I was ok with taking it. Sometimes I go off it for a week at a time and I feel zero withdrawl effects. In fact, I didn't really suffer from panic attacks after I went off it. Thought I was cured. Over winter break, I went off it for two weeks straight, and towards the end of that second week, I slowly started having panic attacks again. Anyway, I'm rambling. I don't think it's addictive in the least smile

I hope you are able to get the counseling you need! If you need someone in the meantime, don't hesitate to reach out to me.

    Hi Ronald,

Firstly I'm so sorry that your situation has gotten worse but congratulations on seeking support.

Now I comment from two different perspectives here. Firstly I use propranolol and secondly as a medical professional who specialises in addictions.

To be honest I think ur gp has done u a wrong.

For someone who is drinking in excess to have increase diazepam and started on pregabalin is crazy. Diazepam and alcohol are tow of the most common contributors to overdose. Pregabalin are nasty, addictive and cause horrendous withdrawals. If you plan to keep drinking I'd suggest going back and asking for referral to ur local addiction service who can help you manage ur mental health and the alcohol situation.

Alcohol and diazepam are both respiratory depressants and shouldn't be mixed ever!

Now as for propranolol it does work if used properly but it won't while u mix it with alcohol, Benz and pregabbas. I feel u have been set up to fail.

While as a mental health nurse I understand the background of this it's really not in ur best interest.

If ur in Scotland u shouldn't be waiting that length of time, however not sure on waiting time in England.

I'd get right back to the doc and say u want treatment not palmed off with drugs.

I wish all the very best, and hope u get the right support! pTSD is not to be messed with

    Much love x

Omg, no wonder you've got PTSD, your anxiety must be through the roof! I would definitely try and stop drinking with all those tablets, because that will make your heart race and make you feel awful, before you even take a tablet, easier said than done when your stressed. But as you said you were lucky to survive so don't let her ruin your life anymore. Aim to cut down your meds with time and the beer you may feel better. Good luck
