Severe Back Pain, is there any hope of relief?

According to the Spinal Specialist I have Degenerative scoliosis, degenerative spondylolisthesis and also a small disc protrusion, therefore I have had back pain for many years.

Surgery was tried to release a trapped nerve but that made no difference and I was told that I would have to live with it, I am 81 but reasonably fit.

Since then I have been living on Co-codamol but to be truthful over the past few years they have not really helped and now the pain is so bad that walking is really painful.

I have no problem moving my various joints about, no great stiffness or anything just pain.

I am going on holiday next week and I would love to walk along the prom, any suggestions for a suitable painkiller that I could suggest to my GP that works?

When I have approached him about this he does not seem to know what to recommend apart from physio, which I have tried but with no success.

Suggestions please!
