Vitamin D deficiency

I am a 57 year old male. I am in good health and recently requested a very complete lab work. Most of my results came in normal with the exception of a border line hypothyroid result and a quite low vitamin D result of 13. I attribute this low number to: living in the Northern part of USA, it is currently winter and not spending spend much time out in the sun even during summer. I have read articles that recommend daily supplements of vitamin D3 in dosages of 5000iu (125 mg) for 3 months to bring up the levels while a telehealth doctor I spoke with recommended only 1000iu daily dosage. Any insights as to the correct dosage? I plan on getting re-tested in 3 months.
