What the Mediterranean diet can do for you

Hi all,

I am on the Patient UK editorial team. We've just launched a feature on the Mediterranean diet that I'd like to bring to your attention.

I am sure many of you will have heard of the Mediterranean diet and some of you may have even tried a supermarket or popular magazine version of it. Please set all those experiences to one side.

In preparation for writing about the Mediterranean diet for Patient UK, I went back through all the scientific papers on the subject to find out exactly what the diet was; what science has shown the health benefits might be; and what you actually had to eat. The research stretches all the way back to the 1970s and there doesn't seem to be any dispute within the medical/ scientific community about the benefits of the diet.

Here's a few key things I found out:

It is to do with the proportions of things you eat (meat, veg, oil, nuts, wine...) rather than any particular recipes or ingredients. You don't need to cook any Greek, Italian etc dishes at all.

There are plenty of things to 'snack' on.

You can buy everything you need to follow the diet in your local food shop. You don't need to join any clubs or take any medication.

The health benefits include: reduction of risk of developing -> heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, dementia... (indeed many of the diseases everyone is worrying about)

Following the Mediterranean diet has helped people attain an ideal weight (and there are a number of scientific papers on this).

I was so impressed by what I read - I started the diet myself.

Anyhow - if you are interested, you'll find everything you need here:

I believe that mediterranean diet is probably the best diet in the world. it has been here for thousand of years, proven over all these years but unfortunately due to the fact that is not promoted by specialist it does not get the value it deserves.

this has to be one of the best diets ive seen in a while. the article is very insightful on weight loss help though it always bugs me why people dont post articles promoting dieting AND exercise! doesnt it make sense to be on a diet and exercising at the same time? to me, this is the best way (for me). i will be going on this diet and running/jogging wearing a sweatsuit

    Hello.

My wife Sarah is following this diet. She says she feels a lot better already, and she has been following it for only 30 days. She loves the Mediterranean diet food and she actually enjoys being on this diet.

She decided to start following it after reading ebook “Mediterranean diet weight loss results” on Amazon.

    Here is her meal plan:

On Mondays she eats Greek yogurt with strawberries and oats for breakfast.

For lunch, she usually has whole grain sandwich with vegetables.

And when it comes to dinner, she often makes tuna salad; dressed in olive oil (she loves it). It’s really delicious.

For a dessert she is allowed to take a piece of fruit.

Hope you’ll enjoy in your diet, because it has many health benefits
