Any alternatives to these omeprazoles

iv'e read so much about side effects to these drugs has anyone found alternatives to help? There must be some! I find figs can help! I take them like tablets, chew one morning and night, apparently they contain an enzyme that aids digestion. Theyre not the perfect answer to my irritable stomach but they do help. Chewing gum after a meal can help continue the digestive process for us with a sluggish gut.
Any more?

Its tough dealing with stomach problems. I've been on a long journey with my stomach problems. I was on Omeprozole for about 4 years, but the problem just got worse, I started experiencing some odd side effects (fatigue, tired all the time, constant upper GI gas, etc. amoung other issues). Remember that you should only be on these pills for about 2-4 weeks max per the instructions.
Word to the wise, when coming off, plan it very carefully. I decided to come off these tablets purely because they were making me ill. I went on a journey to get the bottom of my issue properly. I came off by taking out 1/4 of the contents of the pills for a 2 week period, then I'd take out 1/4 again, and so on. This takes strength, planning and patience. You will feel the drop, but will stabilise after a week. Towards the end, I compensated with Zantac for a few weeks, then just dropped to Gaviscone. I used various natural remidies, such as slippery elm powder, liquorice, etc. also. It took about 3-4 months. After this I had an intolerance test (from my local boots store), which revealed I was intolerant to Diary and Barley. I illuminated these from my diet, but took supplements for the calcium. =This stopped the heart burn almost instantly. After this I cut out coffee and alcohol. I managed for a few years like this, but my stomach issues still flared up quite often. After being on holiday with a friend who was a vegan, (who overcame similar physical and mental issues in the past), said give it a try. From here I went on a vegatarian/semi vegan diet. This actually increased my acid production in the short term (again a little bit of juggling, and Gaviscon), but wow! after about 2 months, did it make a difference. Yep!
Now knowing what I know - Diet, exercise and self care(physical and mental). That's the key for me.
Take care.
