Blood results are fine but always sick

Posted , 2 users are following.

For the 1st time since getting diagnosed in April 2015 my blood results all read 'normal' but I feel like I am constantly sick. In 9 months I have had 7 different infections - all hit me hard and took ages to recover. My Specialist put me on Hydroxyurea in Oct 2016 as my blood counts were out of control and nothing we were trying was working. I am now in the 'safe zone' but always sick. Every blood test shows I should be feeling fine. I joke with my colleagues at work that I have to be sick to be healthy. Does anyone else have these issues, everytime I talk to my Specialist about it I am left with the feeling that this is now my life and there is nothing I can do about it.

    Hello jo 49517

I cannot recall that being constantly sick is a common symptom.  Feelings of nausea perhaps but these usually subside after a while and the system settles down. The different infections are possibly due to your immune system being weakened as is often the case with PV and the treatment you receive.   Hydroxycarbamide (Urea) can provoke some uncomfortable side effects but these will subside fairly soon and many people do not find any symptoms at all.  It is all a matter of your personal biological system.  However, in the longer term one needs to keep a close check with Hydroxy as symptoms can become uncomfortable if the dosage is substantially increased over time.   As a matter of interest what was the treatment you were receiving before you commenced with this medication.  From what you say your blood tests are controlled but it appears you may just have something else in your system which doesn't agree with you.  It deserves to be checked further and I would venture to suggest that most patients would follow this up with their medics who would find another medication to offset this sickness.  You should not be sick to be healthy.  It is bad enough having to contend with a serious blood disorder without having the concerns of another unwelcome symptom.    Maybe  once the Hydroxy has settled down to a routine things will improve but if your malady doesn't decline then seek more advice medically.  Perhaps other patients have suffered similarly and will reply to your queries.   I have never been troubled by nausea in all the time I have been treated for PV.  If necessary seek another Haematologist's opinion..  Good luck.

Thanks heaps Peter. I did not think it was normal. Before I started the Hydroxyurea I was only on Asprin (still am) and having a unit of blood taken on a regular basis. This was not controlling my blood counts and each time they took blood it would take me about a week to recover. I have struggled with nausea from the begining but the other illnesses I do think is the Hydroxyurea because normally I have a good immunity.

      Hello jo,

Thanks for your message.  The aspirin you take is really for thinning the blood as PV will cause the blood to thicken.  I can understand the venesection side as this appears to be quite normal.  Aspirin if taken in larger doses is not medically recommended due to the effect it can have on the stomach.  One could never rule out the problem with Hydroxy as this can have some very unusual effects as I know only too well.   If you feel that this medication is the problem then there are others that can be used.  Your doctors will know of these.   As I have already said, I have never experienced any sickness or similar using Hydroxy.  I trust you can find the solution soon.  Hope you have a good Xmas with a good deal  of comfort and peace.  Best wishes.

      Peter.

      Hi again Jo,

Just to say that another patient using this site suffered similar symptoms to those you have and was diagnosed to be due to the Helicobacter Pylori bacteria infection that causes so many problems with the stomach.  Anti-biotics was the immediate cure which took a few days.  This is a widespread complaint with many people and is known to cause stomach ulcers.  Worth an investigation I would suggest. It is something that can recur.

      Peter.
