Hair Loss

Posted , 5 users are following.

I have been diagnosed with polycythaemia JAK2 since the beginning of the year and have experienced most of the associated symptoms.  However, I have noticed that I am losing my hair at a steady rate which I find quite alarming.  I know I am 80 years old but have always had a thick head of grey hair but it is now noticeably thinner.  Has anyone else experienced this please?

    Hi Bernard -

No, I was diagnosed with same thing in July, but do not have hair loss (thankk heavens!).  What medications are you on?  That may be the answer.  I do not take medications, and so far have not done phlebotomy.

Hope you are otherwise doing well - M

Hi bernard, hair loss is only common in Polycythaemia Vera if you are on chemotherapy such as 'hydroxycarbomide'.

However there have a few individuals including myself who has developed some mild thyroid problems which can cause this too.

It is always wise to seek professional medical advice.

I hope the answer is simple and rectified soon.

Hi, Bernard. Yes, I'm a woman, and have been noticing steady hair loss. I think since I am on Hydroxyurea, it may lower my blood so much, I may be lacking vitamins. I don't want it to interfere with my treatment, but I started taking  a multiple vitamin that contains folic acid. Folic acid loss may cause hair loss.

    Hi Bernard

I also had thinning hair but had thyroid problems as well as polycythaemia JAK2.  Had one side of my thyroid taken out and am taking thyroxine 75gm per day and I have noticed that my hair is now growing back. I would suggest asking the doctor for a test for thyroid problems to see if that could be the reason for the thinning hair.

Thank you to everybody who have replied to my hair loss problem.  It has been very useful and I shall take advice and visit my GP for a blood thyroid test.
