Hives on hands and feet

Hello all,

I need some advice for my child.

3-4 weeks ago my partner and I contacted Covid-19. Just as we were coming to the end of our isolation my 4 year old daughter developed hives on her hands and feet which one hive was covering the entire sole of her left foot! After plenty of sleep and immune boosting foods the hives went away and we are now left with itchy red skin on her hands and feet that are pealing a lot. Is there anything we can do to help make this go away? Has anyone else experienced this? Is this related to covid-19?

any help would be much appreciated!

Hi, I've not experienced hives but I've had quite a few unpleasant skin manifestations of covid. There's a lot of developing research about how and why covid affects the skin. The dermatological manifestations are vast! I've read that the hives reaction is likely the histamine and allergic response of the body from the immune system being out of whack from covid. This is such a complex topic but basically covid creates an imbalance of Th1 and Th2 immunity. Also, there are a lot of ACE2 receptors in kerotinocytes as well and covid is believed to work through ACE2 receptors. I've had horrible rashes, redness, itchiness, prickly sensations, and hair loss from covid. I've yet to find a way for them to subside and I'm going on month 10 (Although, I did have a second bout of covid in there...very unlucky unfortunately!). I do find some relief with regular H1 antihistamines. For me zyrtec has provided the most relief. Unfortunately in regards to skin, I'm facing taking accutane to help mitigate the allergic rashes and acne that covid has stirred up. It's worth making a visit to a dermatologist if you haven't seen one yet!
