How long do I take Mefenamic acid for?

Posted , 1 user is following.

I have been prescribed Mefenamic Acid, the chemist gave it to me in a plastic bottle with the instructions 'take on first day of menses' - that was it! no leaflet to explain what it is etc.,

Do I continue to take it, or take it for a week? Does anybody know?

Never taken the drug before, but hopefully this will assist with heavy bleeding each month.

Thanks JP :?

    Hi JP

On Patient UK we do have a Drug Information leaflet on Mefenamic Acid at https://patient.info/showdoc/30002254 but unfortunately, it only covers the possible side-effects and what the medication is used for.

I have previously taken this medication to great effect but if the directions/instructions are not clear, it would be worth double checking with your Doctor's surgery or go back to the Pharmacy.

You should start taking it the day before your period starts. You continue to take it on the starting day and the day after that (if you feel you need it).

DO NOT TAKE THE PILLS FOR MORE THAN 3 DAYS.

Not just 3 days in a row, but no more than 3 days in a month/cycle. You take 3 pills a days which means you take 9 pills every cycle, no more.

Mefenamic acid is like any other drug, too much and bad things start to happen.

I take Mefenamic Acid ( great stuff!) for heavy and painful periods.

I take one 500mg tablet 3 times a day after food, starting the day before my period is due until day 3 of my period.

It really does need to be taken after food as can cause indegestion pain!

I suggest you phone or email you doctors surgery if you want to be VERY sure.
