How long for omeprazole to begin to work

Having had very bad indigestion along with severe back pains for over a month my GP gave me omeprazole and within 2 hours my symptoms faded and I was feeling 100% better for 2 days but then the symptoms began again and I am back to square one. I am 1 week into a 4 week course and wonder if anyone could tell me when I should start to see results. I just find it strange that for those first 2 days all seemed fine but now the symptoms have returned. I am also waiting for the results of a test for H pylori which I should get in a couple of days. How long should I wait before seeing my GP again?

Hi, sorry to hear you are having problems. I found my symptoms cleared somewhat after the first few hours and within a day or so the heartburn had gone altogether. Have you been taking them at the same time of day? first thing in the morning before any food and leave off any food until an hour after taking them is the best. Have you maybe been eating foods you wouldn't normally have these last few days and it has exacerbated your problems? I haven't heard of backache with heartburn, but I would give it another week to 10days then return to your doctor, or you could even ask your pharmacists advice. Are you taking them exactly the same as you did the first 2 days I suppose is the initial thing to consider. Good luck.

Thanns for the reply Saffy.I think that since posting my problems have got slightly better. I do take them first thing on a morning but at first maybe not quite 1 hour before breakfast. I am finding that now my problem is worse at work. I work as a gardener for a local authority and my job involves plenty of bending, stretching etc, which seems to make the symptoms worse. When at home the symptoms diminish and I feel fine over the weekend. Anyway got an appointment with my GP on Monday to ask his advice.

Hi Heinzy, yeh I get problems in the morning if I do alot of bending. I've been told heartburn is always worse in the morning when you have an empty stomach. In fact I find that I am better when I have actually had something to eat (after about an hour from taking Omeprezole )than I am if I forget and have nothing all morning. Empty stomach syndrome again I reckon! Good Luck for Monday.
