I have sudden rebound of acid reflux. What should I do?

Dear doctors and friends,

I used to have mild acid reflux (probably only once in a few months) so I went to consult a doctor at my country's national clinic. He prescribed omeprazole @ Zempro 20 mg, to be taken once a day. After taking for about a week or less, I ahd diarrhoea. 3 days later, I got worried thinking that I had contracted some undesirable bacteria so I discontinued my medication. My diarrhoeastopped too. During this while, I felt lousy - bloated feeling and flatulance (probably due to food not digested well). So I took a bit of apple cider vinegar and probiotics with meals and that made me feel better. About 6-7 weeks later, I felt a bitter taste in my mouth and after a few days, my throat got sore. I realised that it was silent acid reflux.

Question 1: Was this rebound of acid reflux due to my discontinuation of omeprazole cold turkey? Did my LES get weaker because of this? What should I have done at that moment? Continued another course of omeprazole and slowly tapered it off?

Question 2: Could the doctor have just given me antacid or H2 blocker instead of a PPI in the first place?

Later, I consulted another doctor at our national clinic. This time, I was given H2 blocker @ Ranitidine 150 mg, twice a day instead.

Question 3: Is this okay or should I take one dose of Ranitidine 300 mg only at night?

Your advice are highly appreciated. Thank you.

Firstly I have had acid for many years on/off and waiting to see a consultant privately as like you I have taken omrezole and have bad symptoms of abdominal pain and loose stools, I also get a gnawing pain in my upper Tum and like acid and lump in my throat, I have also been prescribed ranitidine and they are much better. But in my opinion I think we should be checked to be treated correctly as my GP said they will see the root of the problem as some times we have Helibactor and that is treated with antibiotics, I read so much on these forum and now I am seeking to see someone who specialises in acid gerd  and getting a correct diagnosis and the right medication, as I do believe this will help one mentally . Good luck this is such a common problem but with all the thing you hear in the media I do believe we should get checked out

      Dear joanne31598,

Thank you for your advice and mental support. I believe if one is lucky enough, he or she will get to see a doctor who is able to get the right diagnosis and give the right prescription. I still have this lump feeling at the back of my throat and bitter taste in my mouth. This could mean my stomach acid is still seeping silently out of my esophagus sphincter. I hope that after taking Ranitidine for another few days, my reflux is reduced. There are articles saying to sleep with the bed elevated 4-6 inches at the head. I have not done this yet as I will have to buy a new divan.
