Its good to hear other people's stories about lanzoprazole, many seem similar to mine. I was prescribed lanzoprozole four years ago due to severe reflux, small amount of inflamation and slight hiatus hernia. It worked wonders and still does, although I still have problems with gas which can often be uncomfortable and embarassing. I have tried to come off lanzoprozole recently but it resulted in symptoms much worse even than when I was prescribed with the drug four years ago - extreme stomach pain, lots of acid, no sleep, it was terrible and I lasted only three days without it. My guess is that my stomach has adjusted to the inhibition of the secretion of acid and when that is stoped it goes into overdrive because the stomach should be secreting acid for a number of reasons. Also taking the drug has a psychological significance and I would say it is even addictive because stomach related diseases are particularly unpleasant and can cause nervousness and lack of sleep etc, leading to more stress. Unfortunately there seems to be no real solution, but I am trying to gradually move to 15mg daily.

I have had the same problem myself and have been on lanzoprazole for about 5 years. I have had problems with acid indigestion for about 18 years and have had 8 different doctors and various remedies for the acid which drives me nuts. When I had a suspected heart attack about 5 years ago I was put on lanzoprazole 30mg and it worked immediately. Like most of the people who have made comments about taking drugs for the rest of their lives, I have tried to stop them and within 3 days I start to get indigestion again and then the pain starts. The Lanzoprazole helps after about 4 hours. I have found that if it is particularly bad and I need an immediate source of relief, I will have a grapefruit. This hurts like mad to eat for about 30 minutes but it seems that the acid indigestion is a similar acid produced by the stomache and the grapefruit causes the stomache to produce an antacid to counteract the grapefruit and it hits the other on the head at the same time. I get quick relief that lasts until the lanzoprazole kicks in. I can only have grapefruit once every month or so as it would cause problems with the acid.

I was prescribed Lanzoprazole because of a persistant sore throat. It was thought that as I have to take sleeping tablets I wasn't noticing my reflux. As my throat was still slightly sore I didn't get any more, I had been on them for several months. A few days later I woke choking and the taste of vomit (sorry) in my mouth. I am now back on the tablets just incase it is reflux not wanting a repeat performance but still with the sore throat. :ill:

I have just started on this drug after stomach problems and it works like magic! However, is it safe to be on long-term?
