Just need some help please

Hi everyone - I will tell you the back story and where we are today and then ask for what help i need.

In 2014 after 3 years of pain and having issues with my hands and arms i was told i have a nerological issue that will progress in time.

I have been on sick for 5 years with this issue and i get alot of pain.

I am on 600mg of Pregablin (300mg morning and night) and my GP has told me that is the most i can have. i also take 60mg of Duloxetine at night and 1000mg of naproxen and 1000mg of Solpadol a day. So all in all thats alot of pain killers etc. Sadly all the above is not killing my pain. My GP says the next step is Morphine so im told.

My question is dose anyone out there no anything else i can try before Morphine as a last resort.

The best thing is to speak to your doctor.

Hi thanks for your reply - i had done a few times and he says that morphine is the only thing left that would be powerful to kill the pain. But if i can help it i dont want to go on it till the last resort. I have a great relationship with my GP and he has not forced me to go on the morphine at all. He just gives me the option to go on it and i keep saying no as and ive told him there must be something else i can try before we go down that line.

    Hi,

Well I was always scared of morphine.  I have Osteo Arthritis, A 2nd Hip replacement wheich failed and due to that I'm been on crutches for 2 years and will be permanently. Got scoliosis, spinal stenosis and a few other things LOL

Anyway I spoke to a different GP {in the same practice} and he mentioned morphine and I said no thanks.

Next appointment he mentioned it again and said......what would you rather have. A life of pain and no morphine.  Not much of a life or a life that you could live happily with some morphine and a doctor checking it all the time. I decided i would try the morphine....I'mnow on 10mg x 2 a day and it is making a difference. The only thing is I'm trying to come off the naproxen so there is pain because of that,

I do think thats a better way to look at it...Decent life with little pain and morphine againist  not much of a life lots of pain and no morphine

    Love

Hi Eileen - yep tbh im a little scared of going on morphine as i know its highley adictive and that is one reason i dont want to go on it. My condition like yours (but diffrent of course) has progressed fast and no one can tell me if it will keep doing so or slow down. I thikn the main issue for me apart the above is ive always looked at morphine as a end of life drug (please no one who is on it take that the wrong way) and sort of giving in to the health issue also. but in my mind i know its not its there to help. Im totally with you on the better life with it though and im pleased its worked for you. smile

Have you tried steroid injections into the joints, performed by a rheumatologist? I have had a few, sometimes they help, sometimes they don't, but worth a try.

Also, have you used a T.E.N.S. machine.?Here in Australia you can buy a machine for $50. I have used one on the sciatic nerve successfully.

Hi Bettty - I cant have the steroid injections as my issue is to do with the spinal cord so sadly that is not a thing that can be looked at. My doctor thought i might be able to have a op to correct the issue but when the mri and ct scan showed it was the spinal cord at the base of my neck and at the bottom he said there was no chance of the op as it was far to risky and then on top of that it ruled out injections. Funny you should say tens machine a friend was looking online the other day and said have you tried this!

So i might give it a try its a little hope at the end of the day. smile

    Hi

Yes I had acupuncture on the NHS

    They did it for 4 weeks {I think}  To me it was a success. From the day I got it until about 2 days before I was due the next lot I was almost pain free.{ 5 out of 7 days}

They had a break for a couple of weeks and another session....The same.....5 out of 7 days it worked.  They left it for a year then and tried again.....same thing. After that he said he couldnt give me any more in the NHS it was successful enough.!!!

Oh well.  I couldnt afford private sessions and didnt know anyone who had use it privately so didnt want to take the chance.

    Love

About 5 years ago I took part in a 3 week Live in ...Pain Management Course Australia.Home at weekends. An excellent course which helped me manage my pain better..There were, I think, 10 of us.I was the only one not on morphine...most were failed back operations. The one I felt most sorry for was an army paratrooper who had landed on rocks when landing! My advice is...do the Course.
