Just started omeprazole, foods still bothering me.

I've been taking omeprazole for almost a week in a 20 mg dose once a day, and I'm wondering when I might be able to start eating trigger foods without experiencing reflux or heartburn.  So far, the medication seems to be easing it a bit, but I still can't drink even a small cup of coffee without getting heartburn.  Are there some foods that you really can't tolerate even while you're taking omeprazole?

I have actually been off it for a good while, only taking rantinidine twice a day, but recently some things have been happening that have stressed me out a lot, and after a recent bout with IBS, my stomach was just unsettled, and so I decided yesterday to take 10 mg of omeprazole to see if it would help, and in just hours, it did.  My point being, it has always helped me so much, and no food seems off limits when I am taking it.  I wish I had an answer as to why it hasn't kicked in for you yet.

You shouldn't use PPIs as a method of permitting you to eat trigger foods.

But are the trigger foods you refer to the actual triggers you have identified as particular to you or are you looking at generic "banned foods" lists which are actually just a compilation of what some others have reported as being their partcular triggers? -  becuase if they are not a problem for you there's no need to avoid them. About 30% of acid refluxers report coffee as a particular trigger. If it's one of your triggers, I'm afraid you may have to change your drinking habit.

Omeprazole is a once-daily, pre-emptive acid suppressant that build up in the  system to become more effective after a few days of use but should not be used for more than a couple of weeks without medical supervision. If you have oesophagitis, by reducing the acid you'll be giving it a chance to heal. However, that may take a few weeks.

I'm referring primarily to foods that I've identified as ones that tend to cause heartburn and stomach discomfort for me personally.  Some of these are coffee, pizza (anything with tomato sauce, really), or anything greasy.  My OBGYN says my symptoms all sound like the type you have with gallbladder disease, but my gallbladder was removed 6 years ago.  I was prescribed a 3-week course of omeprazole with two refills authorized.  I was under the impression that taking medication for reflux (i.e. omeprazole) would allow me to eat some of those things on occasion without experiencing the same level of discomfort that they usually cause, but I'm finding that this isn't the case.  I don't want to eat a diet high in greasy foods, but it would be nice to have a cup of coffee in the morning or a hamburger at a cook-out without suffering gassiness and heartburn later in the day.  Do others who suffer from these issues take other medications in conjunction with omeprazole?

Hello Barrett’s, just wanted to see if you were still out there. I’ve been doing a lot of reading from your previous posts up to three years ago and you seem to be the one that is has the most knowledge.

I really enjoyed your outlook on long-term ppi use. Because I just got diagnosed with short segment Barrett’s and the doctors going to keep me on a map resolve 20 mg for ever I think .

He didn’t offer to much on information other than telling me I had Barrett’s.

You think there’s any kind of supplements are should be taken  you think there’s any kind of supplements are should be taken   Along with wlevated  bed and Stop eating three hours prior to sleeping?

I do understand that the pros outweigh the cons on keeping the acid  suppressed so the barracks doesn’t get any worse. Do you think as long as I watch my lifestyle ,I can keep the Barrett’s  from progressing

Do you also have a website or a good website I can get more information. ?

      Any help us appreciated.  Matt
