Knife like stabbing pain in stomach

Hi All

Any ideas what a sharp, knife like stabbing pain in the stomach could be? I'm getting it right in the centre of my upper abdomen about an inch or two below my sternum. The pain is random in occurrence, and last for about 5 - 10 seconds, then goes away again. It's done it a few times this morning however I haven't experienced it in the last 30 - 45 minutes. I also have a sore feeling in my throat but no cough and my stomach and bowels are churning like mad, according to my partner my guts have been going crazy all night. No nausea, no fever, nothing else to note.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

My first thought was acid reflux but that doesn't come and go quickly. Have you noticed it occurring after eating? Another thought was that you are having muscle spasms in that area and that's causing the pain (think of how hiccups work). I am guessing this hasn't been going on for long. And I'm also guessing that you have not yet seen your doctor. This you really should do so that he/she can take an X-ray of that  area to see if something is amiss. He will not be able to see soft tissue in an X-ray, but he may find things like a foreign body that you accidentally and unknowing swallowed.

      Thank you for the reply.

I didn't want to put any other info down as I wanted a fresh opinion. I've had 3 years of tests and investigations into my digestive and other symptoms, numerous blood, urine and stool tests, chest and back X-Rays, head MRI, abdominal ultrasound, endoscopy, colonoscopies, seen a Neurologist, Gastroenterologist twice and a Rheumatologist. In the last three years I've had diagnosis' of Gastritis, acid reflux, stomach ulcers, rectal polyps, IBS, Fibromyalgia and CFS.
