My experiences of stopping taking Lansoprazole

Hi,

Like everybody on here I take Lansoprazole for stomach problems.

There are lots of experiences on here of the side effects people get when taking them but;

What effects do people get when stopping taking it?

I think it would be very interesting to find out as I cannot find anything on the internet listing any effects the people have when stopping it and how long they last?

If you have any experience positive and negative could you reply here!

It may be useful to everyone.

I was prescribed Lansoprazole 2 years ago as an alternative to Omeprazole, (which I had been on for years, read horror stories of withdrawal from that so tried to get off it immediately - mistake, needed a full 600ml bottle of Gavison in less than 24 hours)!

Now I am stopping Lans as I have such terrible flatulence, extreme fatigue (going to sleep after every meal), joint pain, constipation and sometimes the opposite, and feel quite worried that if I continue on it any longer, I will be so reliant on it that I cannot be without it - it definitely stops the dreadful acid reflux from a hiatus hernia (diagnosed in 1990).

So far, on Day 1 of abstinence yesterday, I had about 20ml of Gaviscon which is not bad at all considering I unthinkingly made an indian spicy meal .  I did have two small bowls of live greek yoghurt (I make Easiyo yoghurt) - that seemed to help after so hopefully that will be my saviour in the weeks to come.

I woke up today with acid in my throat, quite severe, so I am now drinking a milky cup of decaff coffee, instead of my normal tea, in the hope that will stave off having Gaviscon so early.

Very interesting to read of other people's experiences, will keep dipping back and reporting my progress, and hopefully hearing of others success, and tips!

Hello, I was taking this medication every day for a few months until I decided that I wanted to try without it and see how I would be feeling. About 2 weeks after I stopped taking it, I have gotten terrible acid so bad that I have gotten nauseous from it. My stomach has also been very upset (cramps, gas) probably because of all the acid build up. All in all, I have not at all been feeling great without this and will be going back on right away!

    Hi,

I was taking Lansoprazole for acid reflux for 20 years i suddenly without warning started to get acute vertigo and my hair was thinning !!!! which i could not understand i then checked the side effects of Lansoprazole and stopped taking them the vertigo went within two days I then tried taking them again and the vertigo syptoms reoccured so stopped again my Doc has tried many prescriptions for acid refux but any refux pill that has the word prazole in it causes vertigo as for my hair its very thin in places particularily in the front which is very upsetting. I now use buscopan and take probiotics availd bread and cut down on sugar and alcohol this alll works for me . No side effects for coming off lansoprazole just the old acid reflux back but under control.

I have now been 8 days without Lansoprazole, and have taken heed of other people on here, and have been purchasing the Gavison Advance, which is a behind the counter one, and is so thick and gloopy!  However, it works, and until yesterday I used it as instructed, i.e. after each meal and at bedtime, instead of just glugging it down all day like the normal stuff!  But yesterday, I did not need any at all!  And that was with eating a full fried English breakfast, a carvery Sunday roast lunch with lots of trimmings and Yorkshire pud, ice-cream, etc, and a cheese sandwich for supper.

I am not going to believe that is it, though, after reading of the acid starting up again after 2 weeks or more.  But I will be keeping my fingers crossed!

Good heavens! If I ate that much in one day I would be asking for trouble!

That could be a reason!!  Hands up, I love my food.  But after having a gall bladder removed 20 years ago, I seemed to be invincible as far as fat consumption is concerned.  But, maybe not.....................!

Oh dear, I posted yesterday how good it was going, and then suffered the most horrendous evening and night of acid in my throat and all down my chest, that I have ever had.  Four large swigs of Advance Gaviscon during this time did not keep it at bay.  The side effects of the drug have gone (no wind, no incontinence, no cough) so I am determined to keep off it, but I might start questioning doing it cold turkey.....  I will see what the next few days brings, and maybe will have to crack open the capsules and take half a dose, or take one every other day.

    Hope not.

I have now been to the doctor, as Advance Gaviscon seemed to be giving me continuous diarrhea, (although he said it would have given my constipation)...  Anyway, I have been prescribed Ranitidine 150mg and, touch wood, that seems to be keeping it at bay.

i started to get occasional reflux in the evenings and had oesophagas check and told I have a grade A hiatus hernia so given lansoprazol. But I understand this drug is to prevent painful reflux by cutting down on acid production and that it helps prevent bleeding due to Asperin use (told to take this because I have minor ischeamia of the white matter). I suspect though that as I rarely get reflux that I should not take lansoprazol so often.

has anyone a view on this? Thanks.

I have been on Lansoprazole 30mg daily for 6 years! Had an endoscopy last year as my symptoms have worsened over the last 2 years, my Private Consultant told me that I had polyps on my stomach but they were benign, he told me these were a result of having taken lansprazole for such a long time, he also told me I should watch what I eat in relation to acidic food, the list is endless... in fact after so much research and my own experience I'm becoming an expert! what triggers it for me is coffee and chocolate, every time! and I'm sorry to say but alcohol triggers it too, the list is endless! If you have any dietary questions please fire away as I'm sure I'll be away to reply to them. My hiatus hernia is tiny but causing me a lot of pain and making my life a misery... 😢 so like some of you here I have decided to STOP taking my daily 30mg dose of Lansoprazole, I am determined to get there and be pain free one day..... It's only been a day and so far my mouth has been on fire but I won't give up without a fight! I'm so glad I have found this website and hope we can all support each other.

I only have slight problems. I get the feeling as if it has not quite gone down properly (the food!). I think the tablet helps a bit and don't seem to have any side effects. You are right about being very careful and it is important to eat little mortals and not too quickly. I ate a large spag. Bol. While ago and paid for it with projectile vomiting all night.

I avoid anything tomato based as they're acidic, I totally agree with smaller meals but also important to eat at reasonable times too, hope you feel better soon 🙂
