Hi,
Like everybody on here I take Lansoprazole for stomach problems.
There are lots of experiences on here of the side effects people get when taking them but;
What effects do people get when stopping taking it?
I think it would be very interesting to find out as I cannot find anything on the internet listing any effects the people have when stopping it and how long they last?
If you have any experience positive and negative could you reply here!
It may be useful to everyone.

I've been on Lanzoprazole for at least 9 years and for many years was on 60 a day until I moved and new doctors sent me for checks on stomach. I have large hernia and 2mm barrets. However I also have deposits on two area's on bone in body and was checked for the Big C which is clear. My MGUS blood count is around 29 - 33 which is showing some blood disorder and now feeling weak in legs and generally.
I am a size 16 which is 12 in the USA and aged 51. A few years ago I got to 10 stone 4 lbs and was able to stop taking lansoprazole ..thought it was for weight but recently found that it is cups of tea that was causing worse symptoms. I am trying to come off Lansoprazole as I do believe it is this tablet that is causing my body and bones to have these issues. It maybe long term that this tablet as serious side effect some much so it may be deathly. I do understand that we do need something to to help. I wanted to note my thoughts down as I suspect lanzoprazol to effect my bones and health long term. I don't drink or smoke.

A suggestion is to stop drinking tea and it could be something within tea that effects stomach lining? I cannot be hundred percent sure on this. I'm finding tea is a factor of heart burn. It could be different for everyone but it's worth investigating. Was reduced to 30 mg a day but have not had any for about 5 days now Haven't had a cup of tea for three weeks and noticing a huge difference. I now drink weak coffee and skimmed milk. Also sensitive to soya milk.

Great to see this discussion and that I'm not alone in hating ppis! I was on 40mg of omeprazole for a week when I got horrendous side effects and had to stop them. I switched to 30mg lansoprazole and after 2 weeks again got side effects so had to stop. I'm on day 6 of stopping and eating small amounts of bland food and taking gaviscon. I have no appetite and aches and pains and last night I barely slept for the nausea. I can't believe the effect the drugs have on me when I've only been on them a short time. All tests including endoscope have been fine so far so I think I must have had inflammation in my oesophagus from silent reflux. I'm confident by cutting out tomatoes, alcohol, coffee, fizzy drinks, chocolate etc I can improve things but I just need to get my body healed from the ppis first. I wish I had never been prescribed them, they have made me be off sick from work for a month!

Laura Try Pink Lady Apples when you feel the burn happening it works for me. I Learnt from the Internet that apples help. I also take Gaviscon or Rennie Tablets if I dont fancy the apple.

hi
i was also only taking Lansoprazole for a short time (around a month) but felt so exhausted and had horrible discomfort and tingling in my arms and legs that i stopped taking them.
I felt ok for the first 2 days then started to get discomfort in my stomach, muscle aches , joint pain and nausea and loss of appetite. i lost around 7lb in just over a week ! im now on week 3 and am still suffering ! i am able to eat again but only small portions and i still have the joint/ muscle pain. im totally fed up but determined not to go back on the Lansoprazole.

hi i have been using this drug for close to a year now ,it is so awesome and helping me with the severe pain i get in my stomach ,the pain is so severe it takes me to all fours creeping like a dog ,problem is im feeling abit weak ,when i walk in the cold my neck feels strange with tweetchy sound like bones cracking ,i feel this drug is possibly weakening my bones and joints ,i never wana feel the stomach pain again cos it is so severe feels like it could knock me out.
ima stop using the drug (lansoloc)and start using creatine to build up my bones .See for something else to prevent my stomach pains for coming back ..

i have tried several times to stop lansoprazole , by cutting them down over a period of time . But it is very difficult as I cant take gaviscon so ive tried umpteen herbal remedies and potions with limited success ! Anyway I think that the best thing to do is to take the smallest possible dose that keeps your symptoms at bay and have a good diet . Making sure you get a regular check up to monitor your vitamin levels as landoprazole does deplete vit B12 etc , hope this helps , good luck

These PPIs give me cramps in feet and various places–was picking up a pan the other day and tendons in arm cramped and fingers locked. I'm on 20gm due to HHernia which helps reflux mostly but do get burps. I am going back to 10mg but will take it before main meal. Then see if the cramps subside. Past experience tells me if I stop this problem goes away. I have just remembered recently I have had some arrythmia and one occassion of palpitations lasting two hours and wonder if that is due to the PPI.

Been taking different ones for the last 8 years. Omeprazole, horrible side effects. Then Pantoprazole, same again horrible side effects. Then beginning of last year (2019) my doctor advised Lanzoprazole, been on it for a year without a break until now. Came off the tablets 6 days ago, the side effects of taking the tablets were getting too much for me, migraines, tiredness, muscle pains and dizziness. After 6 days I have started to get the heavy heartburn back, will persevere though and let you know what I go through. I have quit alcohol completely just over a month ago and don't plan on starting again. I would like not to have to take these horrendous tablets anymore

I was put on Lansoprazole about 4 years ago to protect my tummy as the doctor prescribed daily aspirin alongside statins . I did not question her advice I followed it.
Recently I saw another doctor and she asked me why was i taking aspirin?
She said there really wasn't a need so come off both aspirin and the Lansoprazole, I was delighted.
After a few days ,I started to get severe stomach cramps , I could hardly move and thought I was seriously ill! This was severe for two days and then eased off thankfully.
Then I had a light bulb moment and realised it could be coming off the tablets, I had never considered these tablets as an issue.
The doctor never warned me I would have withdrawal symptoms.
I then googled Lansoprazole and was horrified at what I had blindly taken.
Now weeks later I have been suffering horrendous indigestion and heartburn. I know I am still in withdrawal from these horrible tablets.
I had never ever had problems with my digestion before I took these tablets.
I HAVE DISCOVERED a tablespoon of LEMON JUICE and WARM WATER in a glass, completely settled my indigestion and heartburn , every morning before I eat or drink anything. At last hopefully I am now on track to normal digestion and life.
Never ever will I blindly take any tablets prescribed by a doctor before I research their effects.
I hope my advice helps someone else out there.

I have been taking lansoprazole for well over a year. I started getting some bad side effects...muscle contractions in my stomach and in my chest. They felt like heart palpitations at first. i didnt know what they were. I had numerous heart tests- and all was fine with my heart. I realised it happened after eating whilst on lanz. The length of time I was having these contractions was increasing. It made me anxious and that made it worse. They got stronger plus it felt like I couldn't take a deep breath. They were worse if I was leaning forward, sitting at my work desk hunched over my computer. So I stopped taking the drug 3 days ago after ending up in A &E . Decided to go cold Turkey. I had tried before and failed. The withdrawal headache is pretty bad you see. This time though, the symptoms stopped almost immediately. Then all I have to cope with is the withdrawal symptoms. On the first night I had a very bad headache and dizziness plus random pains in my head. I felt abit sick too. This only lasted one night only thankfully. After a couple of days I started getting acid again but I have read that this may happen for 7 to 10 days as your body starts producing stomach acid again...and it should readjust and hopefully return to normal. I take gaviscon now and that sorts it out. I get full quicker and I'm having abit of gut and oesophagus pain and a bit of nausea. Hopefully these will stop over the coming week as the drug leaves my system. I read on the leaflet that long term use of lanz causes magnesium deficiency and muscle contractions so I'm wonder if my side effects were caused by that. I feel better off Lanz. and will never take it again.
something to note is that doctors wont acknowledge the withdrawal systems. ..they dont believe me when I tell them about the headache-dizziness-head pains - they just believe that you get the acid reflux back with gusto which it does.
