Nail problems

Hi everyone

as a newly diagnosed sarcoid sufferer I just wondered if anyone else has problems with their nails? Mine seem to be "lifting" and then after about 6weeks completely fall off.

My consultant said sarcoid can spread and affect any where in the body, I don't know what to do about it and if anyone has any advice I'd be grateful

    Sorry Hayley

I have not come across this and not sure that I have heard it mentioned on the forums either

But it just goes to show sarcoid can just about affect anything Nd anywhere on the body

      ooh that sounds nasty.

I always had weak nails but for the past few year now I actually get them doen every 3 weeks, I have gels over my nails so 'maybe' that has helped.

Gel nearly wrecked my nails but then I don't need any help with them. I'm lucky in that respect

    Hi Hayley,

I also have nail problems. My nails split, crack, flake and snap at regular intervals. I keep them rounded as I find that better than squared, and rub in nail oil. But whether this is Sarcoidosis or just genetic, I can't say.

Wonder if it's anything to do with calcium levels? Fortunately I don't have this problem but mention it to your dr

      Hi Rachel

it only started about 4 months ago before I was diagnosed and my consultant recently told me sarcoid can affect you from your hair to your nails he took one look and said yep it's definitely sarcoidosis although they still had to do a lung biopsy and it was confirmed on Wednesday

I will mention it to my professor when I see her though

I've asked but was told nails are made keratin so it's not calcium levels, but there may be another supplement that would help.

I've just googled to check and I was wrong, nails are apparently mainly protein so a protein rich diet might help. Also recommended was taking silica (horsetail herb), evening primrose or starflower oil. However, I've tried counter-acting Sarcoidosis through herbalism and ended up more ill than before I had been taking the herbs, but that could have been a coincidence.

That's unfortunate for you as my herbalist specialises in auto immune conditions and touch wood, herbs seem to have helped keep my sarcoid under 'control'. Just goes to show that we are all so different in the way we react to treatment.  Regrettably one size does not fit all!
