Omeprazole has ruined my life

I really regret taking prilosec, i fell ill with a virus last december that caused gastroenteritis (severe acid reflux and diarrhea).. i was told to take omeprazole for 14 day treatment.. at the time i did not experience any side effects so after the 14 day treatment was over, about a week later i experienced acid rebound that sent me to the ER. The er dr said i needed to up the dose to 40 mg 2x/day... and this is when i became more ill.. i had severe diarrhea for 9 days, blurry vision, brain fog, muscle twitching, cramping, body jolts before going to sleep, . i couldnt digest my food.. lost 10 lbs.. but i did not know what was happening to me.. i was so sick i had to have a colonoscopy and egd.. i was told i had unspecified colitis.. i stupidly cont this drug bc thats what the drs told me to do.. and as im trying to heal my gut from whatever virus i had i started to develop new symptoms.. extreme brain fog, memory loss, fatigue, anxiety, muscle twitching, buzzing in certain parts of my body.. frequent urination in am. I feel as if i have nerve damage of some kind because of this ppi.. after 4 1/2 months of this posion i have since stopped this med and it has been 11 days but my twitching is still there.. i know this drug caused these other problems bc as i weaned from 40 mg to 20mg to then every other day i began experiencing body jolts and more nerve problems, numbness in certain parts, etc. has this happened to anyone else and did anyone make a full recovery?? I need some help please..Before I took this med I was a healthy 32 year old. Now 33 and still recovering. Does anyone know if this is permanent?

I’m really throwing this out there, out of desperation has anyone tried any form of alternative medicine, like acupuncture or reiki? i’m desperate enough to try anything. Some moments i feel like i get this pressure in my head and it feels so bad, like full seratonin cut off. Almost suicidal feeling just to stop it. I just keep telling myself, this is temporary And will all be back to normal eventually....

I am currently going thru acupuncture sessions and I can say that it is helping a little. I have only been thru 6 sessions and they recommend up to 12 before you see any noticeable improvement. I do have a friend who, had a stomach issue not related to PPIs , went thru a session of reiki and he said that it really did help him. He too was suffering from some anxiety issues related to his stomach. I am considering this if acupuncture fails to achieve substantial improvements. Good luck and please update if you go thru any alternative treatments.

Dang, for what they charge for acupuncture here, 12 sessions would be expensive....

I am extremely fortunate that I have great health insurance. I only have a 30 USD copay. Otherwise it could be about 90 to 100 out of pocket. I understand that it would be difficult to fork out that kind of money for something that could be marginally effective. But like most of you on this board, I am desperate to find some relief. I also started some herbal treatments based on acupuncturist recommendations. May go against western doctor recommendations but their treatment modalities have not produced any sustainable results.

it’s been awhile since you have posted, Have you found any luck with anything And relieving your anxiety?

I have not been able to find anything concrete. I still get "some" anxious episodes. They are not as bad as before. I am still getting acupuncture. I think I am on treatment 11 and plan on continuing for a little longer. I have also added cupping; I figured it couldn't hurt. My cardiologist also put me on a beta blocker since I do have some evidence of tachycardia and hypertension which could be causing/adding to the anxiety. The beta blocker could also be keeping much of the anxiety episodes in check. I wish I could have posted he panacea for addressing anxiety. Let me know how you are doing and if there has been any changes in your status and/or treatment. Good luck and I look forward to hearing from you.

I did 12 sessions of Acupuncture, which helped but did not cure the issues ive been experiencing. Im currently trying out seeing a Naturopath, trying Magnesium, B12, and Vitamin C supplements and going totally gluten and dairy free. All have helped, but not cured. Ive also tried massage therapy, CBT, and Talking Therapy. Currently also waiting on a gut test to be done by the Naturopath which is essentially an extensive stool test. Will get the results in a few weeks.

It's kinda disappointing that my body is back from having twitching problems and fatigue. So far, the muscle pains aren't as worse as it used to be but there are still times that I feel groggy. Balance issues, dizziness, fatigue, and muscle twitching are my problems so far. Vitamin B12 injections helped me a lot but it looks like my body needs more. I stopped receiving B12 injections for 1 week and now it's back. I'm still an active dancer, but the sad part is I'm still tired even at 8 hours of rest.

The symptoms that are gone now are

    Weight loss

    Eye twitching

Severe muscle pain (now it's just mild to moderate)

    Brain fog

I will update anyone here especially Benny about my recovery. Good luck to everyone and hoping for our full recovery.

Taking B12 injections and other elements eg ferritin will make you feel better, BUT

the secret is not supplementing your body with these when the blood work shows you are low in them.

The secret is to determine if you are not absorbing all the B12 and iron that you consume.

If you have an absorption problem then injections and tablets will not solve your fundamental problem of poor absorption.

I still have problems with dizziness but the rest are all good at least for now. I still have a very little muscle twitching and nerve issues but I guess my doctor is right. He told me that I should go back as an active dancer again since my body looks like it's longing for it. I will be having a stool test this week to know id I have malabsorption or something similar to that. Any tips on how to get rid of dizziness? BTW my triglycerides is above 400 do you think it has something to do with dizziness?

      1. Your body may or may not long for dancing, but either way, twitching, is not a symptom of that;
      2. Sorry, I cannot help with your query on triglycerides; and
      3. stool test (not blood in stool test, but absorption) is a great idea. Ensure you do it correctly ie find out if you need to fast or not fast for the test as MANY doctors forget to tell patients that crucial fact.

      Best wishes!

I too have high cholesterol (including high TG). If your TG were above 400, your doctor should have ordered a complete cardio workup. These were the tests ordered for me - Echo, ECG, Carotid doppler, Stress test, Extremity study, Calcium scoring. Some or all of these tests should help diagnose the quality of your blood flow. The calcium scoring test will indicate if you have any evidence of blockage due to plaques. I even had to wear a monitor for two weeks b/c I had a slight tachy arrhythmia.

I have a high HDL 100+ and low LDL 19 but my triglycerides are at 415 which is totally not normal. Is this the reason why I'm feeling dizzy? I also feel a tension in the neck every time I stand up so maybe it has something to do with the poor blood flow. Right now, I doubled my dance workout (although I'm a dance choreographer so I don't need to do it but I have to) and everything including my numbness and muscle twitching are gone. The only symptoms that I have so far are dizziness and tension on the back of the neck.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences to me. I really appreciate it!

I just contacted my GP doctor and he told me that I should come to his clinic tomorrow. My cardiologist (since I was born with a congenital heart disease and got an operation when I was 10) told me that my dizziness might be from either hypokalemia or high triglycerides. But either way, I should start working out like I used to. Thank you so much I hope you will have a wonderful day...if it is possible, I hope that you will have a wonderful lifetime experience. Take care!

Hello again. All of my symptoms right now are gone except for a very mild muscle twitching and also gastritis. My dizziness has confirmed that it comes from my high triglycerides which explains why my nape is tight especially when I stand up (poor blood flow). I also put dancing as a source of my medicine and it did work for me. Currently, my numbness and other things I mentioned above are gone (although I'm still observing my body). It took me 2 months to recover and I hope I could get a full recovery this year.

Now, I'm dealing with the same problem that I have been dealing with since day 1 (gastritis). Any tips on how to lower stomach acid naturally. Bubble gum seems to work for me but it's not enough.

Thank you so much for helping me, I really appreciate it. If you have problems in life, feel free to send me a message and I'll do my best to pay you back. 😃

In answer to your query on acid....I suffered from reflux and while meds helped, what worked better was me reducing the amount of acid forming and acid rich foods I ate. Google both types.

After 3 years on meds and eating correctly, I am off the meds and the reflux is gone.
