Omeprazole Side Effects? Light headed? Anxiety Attacks

Posted , 115 users are following.

My Mother was experiencing severe pain across her ribs and back which the doctors say is indigestion but only now and again. She was put on Omeprazole about a month ago and after taking one in the morning she starts to feel light headed, dizzy and generally unwell. She then seems to panic about it and feels she cant breathe which makes her panic more. Her chest and heart are perfectly fine. She stopped taking the tablets yesterday in case they are causing these problems and she is having tests done next week to check for ulcers etc. Has anyone else had these problems? How long do the side effects take to go away when you have stopped taking them?

This medicaton is terrible!  Like many of you, I thought I was going crazy.  I have never suffered from depression or anxiety before, and after a week on these I was suffering from such debilitating depression and fatigue that I couldn't even get out of bed.  Dizziness, confusion, ears ringing, trembling hands, racing heart, raspy throat... you name it.  As soon as I realized the these are commonly listed side effects of this medication, I stopped taking it, and after about 24 hours I started feeling the fog lifting, and after 48 hours I'm almost back to normal.  Still fatigued, but almost 100%.  I can't believe this medication is approved to be on the market sad

I also have recently started taking this 3 weeks ago. I have been in the e.r. 4 times now and all my test are great. Im to the point I just want to lay down all the time just so I feel better. Go to doctor tomorrow so hopefully she can figure out if it is the pills giving me all these crazy feelings.

Hi, my name is Terry and I am a 66 year old female.

I was prescribed omeprazole about 4 years ago, not for Gerd but for

bronchiectasis, I was told it would stop  germs from my stomach going to my lungs.

i was fine for about 3 years and them I started to feel ill, slight fever, raised blood pressure, anxiety and very scary  palpatations. This continued for about 3 months during this time my doctor changed my lung medication, did loads of blood test and I was booked in to have a 24 hour heart monitor.

The only medicine we hadn't changed was omeprazole so I asked if I could stop it. Within 2 days the palpatations stopped and over the weeks the anxiety stopped and I started to feel ok again. Although it has been over 6 months since I stopped taking it and experienced lots of indigestion in the early months it has left me with a constant inner tremor in my chest which is there day or night which can make it very difficult to sleep at times. I have seen an heart consultant and after test said that my heart is very good and I should try to ignore the tremors. It was great to know that my heart is ok but after 6 months of this tremor it is not easy to ignore. Unfortunately my blood pressure is still raised and I have to see my doctor. I have never had raised blood pressure in my life before. I also still get upset stomach at times.

the only thing which helps with the inner tremors are Tums which someone recommended on this website, thank you.

I wish I had looked on the Internet for people's views on  Omeprazole I would have been more cautious about taking it.

Wish you all good success stopping it.

I  also have stopped taking omeprazole. This will be my second night without it. I have taken it for quite a while now, but having dizzy spells and strange detatched feeling now. And from what I have read about these tablets, it is very disturbing. I have a hernia,  found this out after a visit to a&e with bad chest pain, I thought I was having a heart attack. I swear by Gavison, as the omeprazole wasn't working on it's own, for the reflux and indigestion. Good luck to all who want off this drug.. I really do.

OK, it's 3:44am, I tried to sleep but the Omeprazole related symptoms have returned. I started to take it again on advice from my GP, I told him they make me feel worse, and here we go again. A tense feeling in my upper back between my shoulder blades like someone pushing their fists into my back, palpitations so strong that I could literally hear my heart beating in bed, like a clicking sound.

This is now the second time of starting these type of meds that I get this exact feeling. They eased off before, so I'll stop taking them. Lansoprazole does the same, I know they are the two cheapest of their kind by a long way, there must be a reason for this.

hi i have been on omeprazole for a few years because of a hiatus hernia and acid reflux! i too have had the pain you described in the back! its horrible! palpitations as well! the first time it happened i thought i was having a heart attack! my partner took me to A & E! but after and ECG i was sent home saying all ok! that was about 2 years ago, i still get the feeling every now and again! anyway about 5 weeks ago my blood pressure started to rise and i was experiencing something like adreniline rushes! visit to Drs and i had bloods done! came back that i was lacking in Vitamin D and B12! but worse was to come i started having panic attacks and very bad anxiety!!! the Dr put me on antidepressants!! i've never been depressed or anxious before! the last 4 weeks have been the worst of my life!!! i decided to google omeprazole and came upon this site!! it was like an Eureka moment for me!!! i felt so much better after reading about the people on here having anxiety etc! i have come off them now but i have to take 15mgs of lanzaprazole and gaviscon! not working very well tho coz my stomach feels like it is on fire! has anybody any suggestions of how to combat acid without taking these dreadful drugs!!!! much appreciated if anyone can reply! thanks!

i sympathize with you!  i have never experienced anxiety and panic like i did when i was on that drug.  i think i woould rather have a burning stomach than panic.

my husband started using the unfiltered vinegar.  his gastro said it may help and it took all heartburn away.  he quit drinking sodas too.

glad you found the post.  it saved me from going mad!!!
