Omeprazole Side Effects? Light headed? Anxiety Attacks

Posted , 115 users are following.

My Mother was experiencing severe pain across her ribs and back which the doctors say is indigestion but only now and again. She was put on Omeprazole about a month ago and after taking one in the morning she starts to feel light headed, dizzy and generally unwell. She then seems to panic about it and feels she cant breathe which makes her panic more. Her chest and heart are perfectly fine. She stopped taking the tablets yesterday in case they are causing these problems and she is having tests done next week to check for ulcers etc. Has anyone else had these problems? How long do the side effects take to go away when you have stopped taking them?

    Hi,

I'm a 30 year old male, got diagnosed with barretts last year but was already on omeprazole prior to this. I seem to get many side effects. Palpitations, occasional pain in left arm, rushes of adrenaline, offen moody and short tempered, recently started to feel out of breath normally when I lay down, also feel tired all the time. Due to all this I often have periods of anxiety and feeling I have something wrong with my heart etc. I have had tests done and all came back fine. Anyone else experiencing this?

I did but I am a lucky one who till now managed to stop my reflux by diet and natural remedies for3 months so far with no issues!

I kicked omeprasole into touch it's a cause not a cure only works for about a month then these awful side effects move in making life hell .

my condition is different to yours I had a duodenal ulcer and have a 3mm hiatus hernia all I have done is stop eating chilli curry and chocolate ,

I have cut down on milk I take soya milk on cereal also found it helped calm acid also almonds seem to help digestion

hope you find a way out of the side effects war

I take milk thistle drops in water once a day and pinenut oil capsules  twice a day and chew gum  alot .

      good luck Trev.

So do you find that chewing gum helps keep the reflux at bay? That's interesting as I used to chew gum after my lunch at university, kind of inadvertantly to help digestion but mainly as it was just something I always did, (this is before I started on the meds), and it did help keep the reflux away I think. But I have heard others say the chewing gum can increase the chance of reflux. I'd like to hear what other think of gum chewing/relfux.

I was prescribed with this drug. And it almost got me killed. I had been taking it for two months and it has been the worst experience ever. I thought I was going crazy because of all the horrible thoughts it produced in my mind. It has been almost 3 days since I have stopped taking it. I feel better; however, the thoughts are slowly going away. I looked for the sides effects of this drug and none of them indicated psychological effects until I specifically looked for the name of the drug and the word anxiety since I was having anxiety attacks most of the time. It was just horrible, I have never experienced something like this and I only wish the side effects go away as soon as possible. I want to thank you guys for sharing your horrible experiences with this terrible drug that should not be out in the market. This forum has given me hope since all the thoughts that produced this drug only suggested me to disappear from existence. Thank you.

P.S. what should ingest to avoid acid reflux from damaging my stomach, besides this drug.

    Thanks

Hi bareh97339. I took 2 different PPIs(proton pump inhibitors) for 3 month for gastritis before all hell broke loose. Anxiety attacks daily, numbness/tingling, spasms everywhere, ringing in ears, palpitations, severe headaches, DIZZINESS, 2 ER visits, overnight hospital stay, GP, 2 Neurologists, and a Cardiologist. It took another month to find this site. Everyone agrees it's anxiety, but not sure Doctors believe me about medication. Off for 8 days today, but still having symptoms. However, the symptoms are MUCH improved.

***How long did it take for your symptoms to go away completely????

Don't know if you are still on this forum, but my mother was put on daily Omeprazole

in spite of the fact that I told the G.P (new one) that she only took one when

    she had indigestion

She has fallen twice, doesn't want to do anything, and worst of all her feet and

legs are really swollen, never ever happened before .except when she took

OMP for a few days and her legs started to swell.

The G.P has poo pood my suggestion that he takes her off this god awful drug

She is 97 and does not need more drugs, but she does need some understanding, before she falls and breaks bones She is now in care, but her health has gone down the hill dramatically, Need  a bit of guidance about

    having this drug stopped,

Your over the counter medicine includes Sodium laureth sulfate, or sodium lauryl ether sulfate, is an anionic detergent and surfactant found in many personal care products. SLES is an inexpensive and very effective foaming agent.   This has given me trouble for years finally figured it out.  Stop using this stuff and you will not have stomach problems hands itching blisters fever blisters......etc etc etc

I had severe anxiety from 1999, a side affect for me was nausea, so I didn't eat, lost alot of weight and made my stomach very sore. I was prescribed Omeprazole for about 3 years. In those three years my anxiety went through the roof. I lost even more weight and as you can imagine it was hard on my family. Since I came off them I my anxiety started to fade and the weight came back. I don't really suffer for anxiety or panic attacks anymore. Last week I had a really bad episode of heartburn and I was prescribed this 'wonder drug'. Day 1 and I felt 100x better. Today is only day 2, I am light headed, dizzy, nauseous and very very anxious. I can feel those old feelings of doubt creeping back in. I will not be taking them any more. The anxiety these things amplified have taken me a decade to overcome. If you can get off of them, do it now! Hopefully having had only a small dose over a couple of days, it won't take long to flush from my system.

I have been taking them for 2months, and they haven't done a thing for my silent reflux!! I have felt awful on these tablets, have an appointment with consultant on Friday, and will definitely be asking to come off them, until today I had no idea that the symptoms I was having was anything to do with this medication, but like everyone else on here, very depressed, anxiety, dizzy, headache, joint pains, tinitus, what bothers me is that I've had a referral about my tinitus, and is a side effect of  Omeprazole!!!

Elaine 98946 I have been on Omeprazole for 2months and it hasn't done anything for my silent reflux!!! I have felt awful on this medication, the same side effects as everyone else, so depressed, anxiety, body hurting, dizzy, headaches n tinitus, I've only just found this forum today as I actually googled to see if any side effects and I couldn't believe it!!!! I have an appointment with consultant on Friday, and I will be asking to come off it! I am also having investigations regarding tinitus, which apparently is another side effect of Omeprazole!!!! Never felt as I'll, really hope I can get my good health back very soon, but it has encouraged me that there is a lot of us in the same boat (if you know what I mean)?

I am no doctor Elaine, but I've spent prolonged periods on and and off these pills, and whenever I have used them my health, both mental and physical deteriorates. There are alternatives. Don't let your GP palm you off. For now, I'd stop taking them and hopefully in an few days your start to feel better. It can take up to 6 months for the drug to get out your system though. Good health! Chris

Lankygit, I took several proton pump inhibitors and I had and still have every symptom you list plus more! I have been off 3 months and I still feel like crap. I have been to soooo many specialIstanbul it's unreal. I have now decided to try Neurofeedback. So my plan is PRAYER, CHANGE MY EATING HABITS, AND NEUROBIOFEEDBACK. This is what I think will get my brain and adrenaline undercontrol.

      T.J.

feel free to email me. Prayer you and all the other sufferers of these medications get back to normal.

I have been taking Omeprazole just a little under a month, another two tablets to go.  I have used an over the counterproduct, which is exactly the same, but only for a week at a time.

Following a series of ecgs as part of pre op assessemnt for total hip replacement, last Monday, I was informed that I have Right Bundle Branch Block.  This is a heart condition, that is more or less harmless unless there is an underlying problem with the heart.  The cardiologist wants an echocardiogram before surgery can go ahead.  Surgery will probably have to be cancelled.

I have had headaches since being on this drug.  But, my main symptom is fatigue.  After a full night's sleep, I wake up still fatigued.  Have to take naps, smetimes, and still wake fatigued and just don't want to to anything much.

I am still in shock from hearing about the RBBB, so this may have some significance.

I have been monitoring my blood pressure and pulse rate, and they seem normal, but they sky rocket under pressure, and are a little erratic.  Can change within minutes of each check!

I have had acid reflux for years, and relied on antacids.  They are a nuisance, but they do keep it under control.

I am going to stop taking Omepraxzole and switch back to Rennies, and see whether that brings abut an improvement in the fatigue.  Never felt any light headedness!  In fact, the reverse, heavy headedness = fatigue!  This may be down to how the individual reacts to the drug, though!

I will post again, toward the end of the week with any results.

Do you mind me askng how old you are?

I'm 57 and still menstruating heavily.

I have all the symptons discussed on this forum and am confused as to whether it is the menopause or anaemia or now the Omeprazole I have been taking for 12 months.

I have recently been diagnosed with an ectopic heartbeat which causes me distress but is apparently harmless and again can be caused by the menopause.

Hi, are you feeling better off the Omeprazole? I have reduced my dose to 20mg every other day and take it first thing in the morning half an hour before food as suggested by a contributor on here. I can feel the gastritis building  but am going to persevere. I'm still confused as to what are peri menopause symptoms or side effects of Omeprazole.

Hope the echocardiogram results are ok and you can go ahead with surgery.

Unfortunately, the symptoms have returned.  I am going to have to go back on it, but try to cut back on the amount I take.  At present it is a 20 mg pill.  I rather suspect that being on the medication and then ceasing, may make the symptoms worse.  Rennies are a nuisance, and not as effective.  I will try every other day.  The symptoms associated with Omerprazole seemed to be fatigue, but I was also taking Diazepam as a sleep aid.  I have stopped that, an take them only as needed.  So, the fatigue my be a build up of the Diazepam.  It's a question of sorting out the effects of one drug over the other!  Will keep you posted.
