Phlebotomies/venesection

Hi can you pay privately to have a venesection/phlebotomy in the U.K.? I'm still ongoing with the saga of a diagnosis and my blood dropped so on a wait and see scenario at the moment but it's on the rise again after my last blood test which was last week its now up at 16.5 and 0.48 which isn't as high as it's been in the passedbut and my husband and I have booked a holiday to high altitude as it's skiing because my blood dropped and we're flying too, I'm so scared to induce a blood clot I was thinking of if I could having a venesection before I go to help me, otherwise I'm thinking about cancelling I'm so concerned. 😩

Hi Julia, talk to a doctor about this, the doctor may put you on claxine (needs to be injected). Ask about pressure stockings as well.

    Hi Julia

Also ask about a drug called Xarelto - l used to have a claxine injection but my haematologist put me on to Xarelto when flying (over 6 hours) and it lasts for 24 hours. Much more convenient then getting jabbed and carrying needles when flying. Also you shouldn't need the stockings

    cheers

Thank you Paul, I'm probably worrying over nothing but I've lost a bit of confidence. X

      Hey Julia

You have to live your life as normal as possible. l've had PRV for 27 years and it hasn't stopped me from doing anything. Just need to take precautions. Have the venisection, have a clexane injection or tablet and enjoy your holiday with your husband.

l live in Australia and have flown to Europe 4 times in the last 7 years without any problem and they are very long flights !

      cheers

      Hello Paul,

My name is Uros.My doctor said to me that i have PV.

I am 39 years old and was very afraid when i heard that.

I read that you have PV for 27 years.

Can you tell me more about that?

My highest values before phlebotomy was ETC 7.6 (3,9-6,0), HGB 197 (120-180), HCT 0,58,

What can I aspect about PV and can I have a normal life?

      Best Regards,

      Uros

      Hello Uros

Nearly everybodys experiences with PV are different. Peruse this discussion board and you will understand.

l was young to be detected with PV but because l was a blood donor the HGB reading was on the high side l was asked to undergo tests before l could continue as a donor. Had l not been a blood donor l could have been much older and suffered a stroke or DVT before being diagnosed.

All things being equal you can have a normal life. l played cricket until l was 38, did athletics until l was 43 and still play basketball at 57.

l will be doing an Oxfam 100km charity walk in a couple of weeks time with thousands of kilometres of training in my legs.

Ensure you follow your doctors advice (hopefully you are under a specialist)

The only major drama l've had is a DVT and pulmonary embolisms as a result was 7 years ago after rupturing my achilles playing basketball.

Symptoms wise, nothing of any real significance.

      Hope this helps

      cheers

      Paul

Hi Julia. No, do not get a venesection without asking the Hematologist. I was going to fly once, and I simply asked him if it was safe to fly. If you don't have an appointment, call, ask the nurse or receptionist to ask for you. I'm sure he won't mind. harrishill
