If your count is too high, your general practitioner shd refer you to a hematologist immediately. That is the usual procedure. The hematologist will possibly test you again, to see if you have the jak-2 mutation or not. If your count is too high, he will diagnose and treat you. Best wishes,

Well your smoking habit does not appear too contentious from what you say. However, with polycythaemia one would be better off without any cigarettes etc. Discuss it with your doctor if needed.

Basically it is suggested that you need to see your general doctor for blood tests and if necessary he will refer you on to a Haematologist for further appraisal. It is the recognised procedure you should follow.
