Recurring abdominal pain

Two years ago I was taken to A&E with severe pain in the upper right side of the abdomen. They suspected gallbladder, so ran all tests/scans and found nothing so sent me home. (pain lasted 4 days with no break) Two months later, exact same thing happened and hospital still found nothing so discharged me with tramadol and no follow up. (tramadol stopped the pain)

I became dependant on tramadol and took it every day for about 18 months. (stopped tramadol a couple of months ago) Whilst on tramadol, every couple of months I had severe pain episodes, but this time the area varied. In 18 months I've had severe pain, lasting a few days each time, in my lower right abdomen and upper left, as well as the original pain in upper right.

The hospital have pretty much given up and now that I'm refusing any addictive painkillers they won't do anything.

Does anyone have any advice at all?

*Health background - prior to this, no health concerns. When pain began was drinking heavily, but am tee total now. Moderate smoker. Diet fairly balanced.

Did they rule out kidney stones? I have had them & its worse pain than labor i swear. Starts mild, then gradually gets worse until youre screaming w pain. They hurt when theyr MOVING thru you. Then if they stop moving as in get blocked cuz youre not drinking enough fluids to pass them on through or theyr too BIG to pass, the pain will stop for a time. But at its worst, the hospital KNOWS when a kidney stone patient comes thru the doors, as theyr out of their mind in pain and usually loudly vocal!! As in I was begging and crying for help.

So sorry for your pain & hope you get to the bottom of it. See if your Dr will do an ultrasound of your stomach, for ulcers, check your liver etc.

You need to see a doctor instead of always going to the emergency room. The doctor will do more with you and will take time with you to study your situation and will learn your history as time passes. He/she will run tests and can put them all together and maybe come up with an answer.

Hi Snorky; will not say this is the cause; but it is quite common for women to  have upper quadrant pain, as you describe, if they have ovarian cysts rupturing.    Many times, women have had their gall-bladders removed, only to find the pain is still there....and for some reason (the nerves that respond to lower abdominal pain , also serve the upper abdo region too), when ovaries have a problem, it is felt under the rib-cage area....same goes for problems in diaphragm area (eg spleen / pancreas / liver etc), the pain is felt in the shoulder tips.

?You don't say if you are female or male, but if female, this maybe a cause?? and if so, perhaps a scan of ovaries when pain is occurring, may give you an answer? (blood tests etc won't show up a torting of a cycst on either ovary or testes, but scans usually do).....if a male, was there any mention of torting testes?   this is a very painful experience, too.....

I also assume that on your visits to A&E, they scanned your pancreas, as you say you were once a heavy drinker, and this can affect pancreas and liver.......

    ?Just some thoughts...............Bron
