Sibling diagnosis?

Does anyone have a sibling who has also had a diagnosis of sarcoid? My brother has suspected sarcoidosis and is awaiting more tests but I am curious as to how common this may be? To me it seems unbelievable!

    Hi Shazarr

Yes my brother also has Sarcoid. It effected him totally differently to me. It will be interesting to hear if your brother has Sarcoid. They say it is not genetic but I have my doubts about that.

Thanks Tangles, I have read that it's hereditary in  to 5% of sufferers but not genetic and I'm afraid I haven't got my brain around the difference yet? I will keep you posted.

      Hi Shazarr,

Probably, what they wanted to say is that it is not a gene mutation. However, most people with sarcoidosis have a genetic predisposition (hereditary) - evidently, the children of the same parents can be born with the same predisposition.

This is what I got from MayoClinic:

"Doctors don't know the exact cause of sarcoidosis. Some people appear to have a genetic predisposition to developing the disease, which may be triggered by exposure to specific bacteria, viruses, dust or chemicals. Researchers are still trying to pinpoint the genes and trigger substances associated with sarcoidosis.

Normally, your immune system helps protect your body from foreign substances and invading microorganisms, such as bacteria and viruses. But in sarcoidosis, some immune cells collect in a pattern of inflammation called granulomas. As granulomas build up in an organ, the function of that organ can be affected..."

      I hope it helps...

What else can I say? I hope your brother does not have sarcoidosis or other serious condition.

      All the best,

      Magda

Yes, I'm also the first in my family with this condition. I'm also the first one who developed a thyroid condition, which doctors say that usually runs in families. So, sometimes (or most of the times??) things are not as doctors say...

Hi all, I'm Shazarr's bro. Went for my CT scan today, now have to wait for the results to see which way we go from here. Annoying wheezy cough and very swollen parotid glands are the worst symptoms atm, hate waiting and just want to know now, whatever the outcome, got everything crossed here wink
