Side Effects

I have been taking Lansoprazole for about 3-4 years now. I am really scared to not take them because I suffer so badly with chest pains, pain between my shoulder baldes and heartburn and it has at times been compared to a gall bladder attack. Although I have never been diagnosed with anything or had hospital tests.

However, since the summer I have had a wheezy chest, shortness of breath, palpitations at night, a rash on the tops of my feet, abdominal pain, I ache all over and oh so tired all the time. I am not sure if it is due to the Lansoprazole, but have that permanent feeling of 'comming down with something'. It does sound a bit extreme but it is the only medication I take,

I've looked on this website to see if anyone else has had a similar experience?

I have recently experienced similar side effects to those listed by Shelly. I have been prescribed Lansoprazole for 7+ years and over the last few months experienced increasingly severe symptoms - light headed/dizzy spells, nausea, joint pain, generally feeling unwell as in 'flu. After seeing my GP, who did not believe Lansoprazole was responsible, I reduced the daily amount from 60mg to 30mg over several days and then stopped altogether. Although heartburn increased dramatically leading me to take Gaviscon Advaced every couple of hours, my body gradually began to feel so much better. All the above symptoms disappeared.

On returning to my GP he then prescribed Pantoprazole. Having taken them for a week I am not impressed; I still need gaviscon to kill heartburn whilst headaches/fuzziness, feeling unwell, tiredness and nausea have returned.

I presume the \"oprazole\" element within the medication is the same basic drug? and reacting badly with me.

Are there any other effective drugs that don't end in oprazole?

    Hello Pete

Yes, a drug called Nexium is the original and usually side-effect free but as it is so much more expensive than the oprazoles, doubt your GP will be willing to prescribe.

Had no joy with obtaining Nexium but thanks for the information Jean.

Since my last post when on Pantoprazole my GP prescribed Zoton FasTab. Although effective in controlling the acid, the light-headedness, headaches and nausea were all there plus as the days passed a runny nose, chestyness and tender throat that has gone on for weeks. However, the joint pain which my GP diagnosed as arthritis, has disappeared!

My GP does not believe that Lansoprazole can be responsible, even though that after stopping it for three days, my symptoms are reducing rapidly.

Has anyone else experienced a wheezy chest, shortness of breath or tender throat similar to that of Shelley and myself?

I've been told that wheeziness and sore throat, hoarseness etc are all effects of reflux, this despite taking Lanzaprazole for years. I want to come off them as well; I have a manometry test next week and have had to stop taking them for a week, and nothing dire so far. Feeling of biliousness and what feels as though it could be a slight tummy bug. I will try reducing gradually after my tests, and when I come back off holiday next month am going to investigate relief therapy from osteopaths.
