    Hi Macas,

There could be a connection with PV and mouth soreness which is normally treated with mouthwashes.  Best thing is to seek the advice of your GP who will be able to offer you a suitable medication.   Maybe your immune system is a little weakened which could allow this type of complaint to arise.    Hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply, I have "persuaded" him to go to see GP, like you I feel that his immune system has been weakened. Hr is not on any medication other than aspirin,  will let you know how he gets on.

Hi, saw GP this afternoon and now on antibiotics. When asked the question re immune system he just shrugged his shoulders, showed no interest at all.

While he was out  The Haematologist secretary rang  to recall him to the hospital tomorrow for a venesection he needs four , one every fortnight. !!

      Hi Macas,

Your treatment seems to be following the usual pattern for PV.  Nothing unusual in what you have described, take things as they come and all will turn out well and you will understand better.  The lack of interest of your GP is nothing new really.  Quite frankly they rarely, if ever, are confronted by a patient with PV and do not gain any working experience of the complaint.  The patient is virtually always referred on to the Haematology Unit for future treatment who advise the GP of the treatments the patient have undergone.  PV is a very rare condition so you need expert guidance by Haematology.  It is only during the past 15 years or so that any real investigations have gained any good knowledge of the illness.

      Peter.

Is he on any PV Meds? I know Hydrea can cause a number of possible mouth problems like sores in the mouth.

What is a venesection? Is it like a transfusion? I came close to having one,but my red cells came up a bit.

This is a scary disease, you do not know what is coming next!!

A venesection is the opposite to a transfusion, they take a pint of blood.

No idea what the next step is until we see the haematologist again. Its all very new to us.
