Sudden onset indigestion/acid reflux - gone in 5 months

I hope this is the optimistic upbeat post someone is looking for. I'm writing it because there was nothing similar for me when I suddenly (overnight) developed acid reflux (acid high in the throat, rather than the mid chest pain). I'm not overweight, stressed etc. In fact, I'm vegetarian and virtually teetotal . Doctor couldn't offer any cure (or even any reason for it) only acid suppressant (Omeprazole 20mg) to control the symptoms. I felt I was on my own. I couldn't find any good news stories on the internet of people who'd got better, just loads of people who'd had it for years and were suffering. If you are in the position I was in, take heart - I did get better! It took 4 and a half months from start to finish. I've never been ill for so long in my life! (I'm 50). I reckon the last month was simply about getting off Omeprazole and if the doctor had given me better guidance on how to do that, I might have come off it even sooner. When I first tried to come off it he suggested I just skip the tablet every other day. Big mistake! After a day or two the acid reflux comes back even worse. Much better for me was to open the capsules and roughly divide the contents and take a half dose every day for a week. The next week take a quarter dose every day. Then try a week of no doses at all. At the end of the third week, I was off Omeprazole with no symptoms. The Omeprazole took about a month to kick in and even then almost never took away my symptoms completely. I tended to have a slight sour taste most days, but once that symptom was stable (ie nothing worse than that for two weeks) I started coming off Omeprazole. I found chewing gum gets the saliva and digestion going and fennel/licorice tea helped to cover up the sour taste (but steady on the licorice tea as it can increase blood pressure) and I ate a lot of kiwi fruit, banana and pineapple which are supposed to have enzymes in them.. As I was coming off Omeprazole, I also took lycopodium, a homeopathic remedy which of course I don't believe in. (How could it possibly do any good? The science is non existent.) But I wouldn't be giving you a complete story if I didn't include that bit of information. Also, keep a detailed food diary. It will make your doc realise that you aren't eating junk and it makes it easier to judge if some foods make you reflux worse. I gave up tea, coffee, chocolate, hot spicy food, fried food, butter, fat in general, but have now reintroduced all these into my diet with no ill effects. Now, I might get a slight sour taste maybe once a day or less, readily relieved by a simple glass of water. But maybe that's not necessaily abnormal and I'm just hypersensitive about it now - it might just be slight dehydration. I consider myself "cured" anyway. I do hope this story gives hope to anyone newly suffering from this symptom. There's a reason why they want you to wait 6 months before they put a tube down your throat to have a look - you never know, you might have got better by then.

    Hi Noo-noo

Many thanks for posting this. I truly appreciate this. Unfortunately I was on an NSAID medicine called naproxen for 6 months and this resulted in gastritis for me sad. The first month (April 2015) I just felt dizzy and felt as if my stomach was burning all the time. I was put on esomeprazol (20mg) from the beginning by my GP. At the end of the 4 weeks though - I imagined the esomeprazol kicked in but as it happens by too much, as I felt no burning sensation anymore and pretty much just normal. But, something new happend I refluxed (for the first time in my life) during the night for a couple of hours. Horrible experience - could taste the acid in my mouth, felt incredibly boated, was burping like mad etc but as soon as I defecated, I started to feel better again. Then, a week later, the exact same thing happend. I'd had a normal sized meal but felt as if I'd had a feast. Felt incredibly full and then the burping began. I realised at this point I didn't want a re-run of the time before so I decided not to go to sleep. At 3 am, I finally defecated and felt much better. The next day, I had a gastroscopy, where they found there was no damage anywhere (good news!) The specialist told me that my doctor had wrongly diagnosed me with gastritis. He thought I probably had what is known as 'functional dyspepsia'. He advised me to stop taking esomeprazol (20mg) which I did promptly. Funnily enough, after coming off the esomeprazol, I have just been burping non-stop, feeling very full. I suspect that my stomach doesn't have enough acid any longer to digest food. I also started refluxing when burping (most of the time). I realised I was reluxing as I developed a sorethroat. My throat hurts sometimes when I burp. And I get mild heartburn mostly after eating. However, this is the end of the second week after coming off esomeprazol and already I am burping less than last week, but,I have drastically changed my diet - I am using Koufman's Low Acid Diet as a guide. So far I feel I am heading in the right direction, as in getting better, but I feel progress is so SLOW. I have been sick now for 8 whole weeks and wonder if/when I will get better from this. I am also wondering to what extent esomeprazol has contributed to my symptoms by making them worse. I have now read in many online forums that you should never just stop taking PPIs cold turkey. Any advice would be appreciated. I have now been off PPIs for two whole weeks...

Hey I've had the same symptoms I think was also caused by ppis. Has your Symptoms improved?

Hi Cme, I just wanted to catch up with you to see how you're getting on? Did you manage to stay off the esmoneprazol? And would you say you're better now? I'm about to start taking PPIs and am very scared about the rebound. Many thanks.

Would treatment for functional dyspepsia differ from one for gastritis? Where I am they block your acid production regardless. To protect the oesophagus they said...

Hi Paul, give it some time. It took me 2 months to calm it down. Stressing out about it just makes it worse. Just know that many people go through this and you will be okay. I had it really bad for about a year and I was on 80 MG a day of omeprezole. Today I take 30 MG of prevacid and hardly have any symptoms. What really worked for me was eating cold oatmeal with soy milk. It calms down your stomach and absorbs the acid. Let me know if you have any questions.

You are very kind.  I am verry worried because the acid always seems to be in my mouth whether stomach is empty or not.  I have not found anything to eradicate this.  Worrying and reading too much unfortunately does not help.  I will try the oatmeal and soy milk.  Any other suggestions? Was yours constant (I mean day-long acid in mouth) sensation?  And I don't get any chest burn really.   Thank you again,

      Paul

Yes, I was constantly spitting all day in a trash can under my desk at work. Everytime I drank water I would have to go spit. My life was a nightmare and I felt gross. I did so much research about this, that I felt knew more than the doctor. I learned that this can be caused by a few reasons. 1. Your stomach is not creating enough acid so your stomach is emptying slowly which causes acid to back up. 2. You have a hiatal hernia which is not allowing you sphincter to close properly which allowing acid to back up into your esophagus. 3. Your stomach is creating too much acid and your sphincter is not functioning correctly. Remember that stress can cause issues like this. I believe this was the cause of my problems. Everyone has reflux the problem is if you have too much it starts wearing on your esophagus, which starts irritation on your upper gi track which in turn creates mucus. Try to be at peace with this and accept that your body is always tying to heal itself. I also remember my first breakthrough was taking a hot shower and telling myself it will be OK. I also took Gaviscon which also helped. It creates a foam barrier in your stomach keeping acid down.

Thanks for the sound advice.  Not even Gaviscon is giving much relief from acid in mouth.  I feel like my tongue is burning sometimes from the acid.  I want to try the soy milk.  All the best for now and thanks for your ears,

I suffering really really badly with acid reflux. I have Hiatus Hernia and am taking 2 30mg Lansoprazole and Gaviscon.  I've been taking for a few weeks now and feel worse. Went to sleep last and woke up about 2.30am with mega acid in my mouth. My mouth, throat and oesophagus and very sore.  I feel so desperate, very tired and depressed.  I don't think I'll ever feel normal again. Tried everything to help diet, etc and no luck. Is there any hope? Even the Gaviscon irritates my throat and comes up.

Hi Margot, Sorry to hear you are suffering. As I told Paul, hang in there and give it some time. Have you lifted your bed higher so gravity keep the acid down whemn your sleeping. Since you have a hiatal hernia, you may want to try using more fiber and/or miralax to ensure food is not backing up in your stomach and lower gi, this can speed up your digestion. I would give a at least 6 months and if you are still having issues you should consider surgery. I've read that you could also try a chiropractor to help you resolve the hiatal hernia or at least make it better. Good luck and try not to sress about it too much bacuse that just makes it worse. Let me know if you have any questions.

You may also want to try a differnet medication if you dont feel any improvments in the next 2 months. For me Lansoprazole worked much better than pantoprazole and omeprazole even though doctors say its the same.

Hi Lazlow.  Margot,  I feel your pain.  I am also not having much appetite.....not sure if from acid or just depression.  I am going back to doctor tomorrow to explain.  Maybe he will change meds or give me an endoscopy....not sure what to expect but am rather frightened to be honest.  Any suggestions for keeping with food?  Thanks,

      Paul

If you not over 40 the Doctor will probably just increase your medicaion dose or put you on somthing else. You can try taking b12/b6 sublingals, it will increase your appetite. Also, taking ppis long term will results in b12 deficiency so it doesnt hurt to take anyway. Try do some power waking or some cardio 40 mins a day. That will improve digestion and its really good antidepressant. Let the refulx be your motivation during your workout to get better. Also, if you have a smart phone try downloading a free meditation app. Get some headphones and go into a dark room and use the app to realx and calm down.

Hi Paul.  Thanks for your reply.  I have just been to see an emergency doctor with all the pain and discomfort and he has referred me to the consultant with a view to an operation.  I am shell shocked and very scared.

Fundoplication Pau!  If I'm suitable. I am very scared and frightened of operations but I cannot carry on with all this pain and discomfort. So I am hoping and praying that it will be successful.

Thank you for your kind words Paul.  I am 66 and when I had an

Lazlow80 Thank you so much for your reply.  As I posted later I have suffered badly since last September and went to see the doctor today who has referred me to a consultant with a view to Fundiplaction.  Am scared about this and shell shocked but I cannot carry on like this.

That's interesting that they didnt see a hernai back then. That means you may have strained really hard at one point. I read it can be caused by coughing or excessive vomiting. When did you start having reflux? Many people have hiatal hernias and no refulx so you may still have a chance to get under control with medication. I understand if you want to go head with surgery but that will need recovery time as well. When I was looking at surgery I was considering either the TIF or magnetic ring.

How are you now Lazlow 80?  Lots of people seem to have h. Hernias but do not seem to have too much trouble. Trust me to get chronic reflux!  How are you managing with your problems?
    • Posted

I have to say I'm doing really well compared to how bad I was suffering a few years back. I was on 60 mg of Lansoprazole at one point and now I'm on only 30mg and hoping to go down to15mg. I very rarley have any symptoms of reflux. I noticed that soup can really aggravate my reflux so I only eat only a little. My theory is that liquid comes back up more easily than solid food. I used to not eat and drink at the same time. But these days I dont even think about it.

Glad you are feeling better. I will see what the consultant says. I don't want to feel like this forever, but reading some of the details of the Fundiplaction It really scares me.  I wonder if they are successful?!  Cannot believe that I felt fine prior to last September when I went to see a chiropractor and I foolishly had something small to eat beforehand when he pressed hard on my back everything came back up and I haven't felt right since then!  How I wish I could turn the clock back!

Don't beat yourself up on that. The worst thing you can do is stress on regrets. It may have just been a coincidence that you got sick or a hernia during the same time you got your adjustment. But even if it was from the adjustment thats not your fault. I myself have been down the shoulda, coulda, woulda path and it doesnt help anything and the regret can make you really sick. I reccomend making a list of qestions before your visiting with the dr. This way you can have all your qs aswered and put your mind at ease.  Good luck and flet us know what the dr.says.
